post viral headache syndrome (Chronic Fatigue board)

4th June 2001
Hello, I'm new at this. Just posted a message on the headache site. Sorry to repeat myself but I'm posting here because post viral headache syndrome is usually clumped together with cfs. My 11 year old son, Nick has been diagnosed with pvhs at Duke Hospital. He came down with a flu-like virus in Dec., 2000. It was accompanied by a severe headache (he describes it as stabbing pains behind both eyes) that has not stopped torturing him for even one minute (over 5 months now) since the onset of the virus. All neur. and other tests are normal. He's been on most migraine meds with no relief. Some even intensified his pain. Right now he's on neurontin, elavil, florinet, and zovirax. Still nothing is working. Nick has a great Ped Neur from Duke who is still working very closely with us on trying different things. I need any info or stories from anyone who is familiar with this syndrome. My once vibrant son has spent the past 5 months of his life flat on his back in a dark, quiet room in horrific pain. Please help!! THanks, Verla

Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry to hear about your son. Let me see if I can help at all. So two years ago I had mono or at least a similar type virus. When I was just beginning to feel better, I began to have horrible headaches that went on for a good 6 months after. I was missing so much school, failing classes, and horribly depressed. I went to all different types of doctors and for months not one was helpful. Finally, I went to get tested for food allergies and it turned out I had developed a ridiculous amount of food allergies. It seemed as if everything that I had been eating while I had the virus was now toxic to my system. It's been two years now. It still confuses me because a couple times in the past two years I thought my allergies had vanished, but after a few weeks of eating whatever I wanted, they came roaring back as if I had retriggered them. Anyways, generally speaking, I am much better. I still get headaches, but less often and not every day. It's difficult to find things to eat because I now have had to cut out: wheat, corn, soy(most salad dressings and oils are made from soy) peanuts, and some more randoms. It took a couple weeks after my diet had changed to start getting relief. Anyways, I would suggest going to a doctor and getting tested for food allergies. Good luck. I wish all my best and am anxious to hear if a change of diet helps.
