Mouth Sores From Chemo (Cancer board)

7th May 2003
Have you spoken to your doctor about this? You may just be particularly sensitive to the chemo, but there may be something your doctor can do.

Also, you mentioned nausea...are they treating you aggressively with anti-nausea meds? You should be getting IV zofran before the chemo, and then the pill form of zofran, one a day for at least 3 days after chemo. Also, the night of chemo you may need compazine.

There are some other anti-nausea meds, unfortunately I don't remember the names, but you definitely should try something else if one doesn't work. But the key here is preventing the nausea in the first place, if at all possible.

HI,
MY HUSBAND IS FINALLY FINISHED WITH CHEMO-RADIATION TREATMENTS. HE HAD SIMILAR SIDE EFFECTS, FOR THE NAUSEA
ZOFRAN WORKED WONDERS FOR HIM, HE TOOK THE MEDICATION JUST BEFORE THE CHEMO AND THEN AGAIN A FEW HOURS LATER
IT WAS AMAZING NO NAUSEA. ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT IT. FOR THE MOUTH SORES THEY GAVE HIM SOME GRADE ONE MOUTH RINSE WHICH ONLY HELPED FOR A WHILE THEN HE MADE A RINSE WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND WARM WATER. IT SLIGHTLY BURNED THE FIRST TIME THEN HE BEGAN TO RINSE WITH IT MORE OFTEN AND IT REALLY HELPED. TRY TO EAT SOFT FOODS, HE COULD TOLERATE EGGS OVER-EASY, I DON'T THINK HE WILL EVER EAT ANOTHER EGG AFTER THIS. I HOPE THIS HELPS. I WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT IT DOES GET BETTER, IT JUST TAKES TIME AND HANG IN!!!
DEBBIE
