Hi there!
I am 24, and getting my tonsils taken out on august 3rd. I am very scared too. But I am just so sick and tired of these gross, nasty tonsil stones. My tonsils are HUGE, and are just chronically infected and grossly misshapen (according to my ENT surgeon.) This has been going on for about 6 months. It started with me getting continual strep infections (I just started teaching and am exposed to all kinds of germs.). I am allergic to so many anti-biotics, that it just isn't safe for me to continue trying to take them. The last one I took was a member of the Penicillin family (Ceftin) and it caused me to have an anaphylactic reaction 10 minutes after taking the first pill. It was my first, and better be my last ever ride in an ambulance! The pharmacist said there are only two anti-biotics that I can take now, that I am not going to be allergic to. Those are Zithromax and Levaquin. But they're just not working anymore, and I don't want to become immune to them in case I need them in the future for something else. My tonsils are constantly oozing green pus.
I don't know what type of procedure my doctor will be using, but can you tell me what the difference is between the differeny types? I will ask him at my pre-op visit on tuesday. I have been going to him for over 15 years (had many, many, many sinus problems as a kid!) and he is wonderful. He will explain everything, I am sure. Plus, he's an old friend of my mom's. I never even knew that there is more than one way to remove tonsils! He did say that I have "islands" in my throat (big white spots!) that he will suction out when he removes my tonsils.
Good luck to you on your tonsillectomy too! We will be able to compare recovery stories!
