   Tonsil Stones (General Health board)

9th August 2005
Thanks Kathie. I am doing pretty well considering that I am just 7 days post-op. The only problem is that I seem to have developed oral thrush. I called the surgeon as soon as I noticed the yellow coating on my tongue, and he's got me wrinsing with oral Nystatin 4 times a day. It is slowly going away. I need this, on top of the pain from the surgery. Now my tongue hurts too. Tomorrow I get to try eating some white bread without the crusts, and a soft boiled egg and maybe some oatmeal. I've got a list from the doctor of what foods to have for the first 7 days, and then the next 5 days, and what foods to avoid. I'll make sure to avoid baked beans and spaghetti. Boy that would really burn! Ouch!

I am definitely keeping up with the pain meds. I am taking Tylenol with Codeine every 4 hours. It really helps. I have to wait about an hour after I take it to eat or drink anything. He said that starting tomorrow I can try to start replacing it with plain liquid tylenol, but we'll see. I am trying to take it every 5 or 6 hours instead of every 4 hours. He eventually wants me to only take it to sleep with at night. I've been waking up every 4 hours like clockwork for my next dose. I don't set an alarm or anything. I would sleep through the night if I could. I take it at midnight and go to sleep and I'm up at 4am for another dose. I am down to my last bottle and no more refills on the prescription, but my next appointment is on thursday and he said he doesn't have a problem writing me another prescription for it. I had to see him on saturday because of the thrush, so he gave me a prescription for a small bottle. It works well, but it's making me nauseuous.

I have lost about 5 pounds so far, which is good because I am trying to lose weight anyway. But I am just so hungry! The only things that I have been able to get down smoothly are Farina, Yogurt, and Pudding. Whipped cream is good on the pudding too. :) Oh, and lukewarm clear chicken broth. For adventure yesterday, I mixed some chicken broth with the broth from chinese wanton soup! Mmmmmmmm! I have been literally living on pudding! I can't wait to have some white bread and eggs tomorrow! Finally, a real meal! But my mom did make me homemade mashed potatoes last night. Too many lumps, but it was very good! I was very jealous though. My friend came over to see me and he had dinner with us. I ate mashed potatoes, and the rest of them ordered Pizza!

I am so glad to be rid of my rotting tonsils. Even though I am definitely in a lot of pain, it was well worth it. I already notice a marked improvement in my breath. My surgeon said that when he took them out, he squeezed them. He said he couldn't believe the amount of stones and pus that came out of them. I knew that they were infected because every night when I put a q-tip back there to push out as many stones as I could, even if I didn't get any stones I always got a bunch of green mucus on the q-tip. Anti-biotics just weren't working anymore. OMG, speaking of anti-biotics, I better go take my liquid Zithromax! (apparently I had one raging infection in those tonsils when he took them out. He said that they actually gave me a dose of IV anti-biotics while I was in surgery.)

Thanks for the advice!

Elyse
