Advice on stopping aspirin (Heart Disorders board)

25th January 2007
I will try to be brief and I would appreciate any input on this. Mid december I found out I had a heart defect which required a beta blocker and a 40-50%
blockage in another part of the heart. I started on metoprolol, stopped smoking, started taking, along with my multi, fish oil, E, C, Q10, Beta Carratine. That's all been over the last 7 weeks. I have been on Synthroid for many years, and over the past 2 years, Zetia and 1 baby aspirin every other day. About a week ago, my gums started swelling and bleeding. Then I started having pretty heavy nosebleeds. I called my cardio and he does not believe the metoprolol is causing this (actually, my cardio is away, this was another who I don't know.) I mentioned to him that I saw it online as a side effect, but he is sure that's not it. He said stop taking the aspirin. I asked it that was dangerous, he says no. Tells me to go to my GP for blood test to check blood count & platelettes. I go to the GP, he agrees with the cardio to stop taking the aspirin. I mentioned that I also take vitamins, and he doesn't even ask which ones. Ok, so I come home and read that E and Fish oil are blood thinners. I want to go off the aspirin, but safely. I'm thinking cutting it down over time, but would like to continue the vitamins. Don't want these nose bleeds to continue though. I must say, I really felt like I wasn't getting any straight answers from either Dr. today. How can they say, just stop the aspirin. The reason I started taking it was my mother had a stroke at my age (early 40s at the time) and I smoked. I wish I never started aspirin OR zetia. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Lenin,

The only other thing I am taking is an antibiotic for the gums. In dec. I had an echo, a ct scan and a stress test. The only med they gave me orally was a beta blocker and of course the IV dye for the ct & stress test.

I've been taking aspirin for almost 2 years (wish i never started), 1 - 81 mg, every other day. I've never taken 2 at once.

I didn't get the test results yet, should be later today. I take the metoprolol
for the anomolous origin of the rca we have spoken about. Need to keep my heart rate and bp down.

The nose bleeds actually run down my lip out of the blue. The dr. did mention the dryness, so I have a humidifier running starting last night.

I'm determined to get off of aspirin. i just don't believe that stopping at once is safe, even though the dr's say it's fine. I'm thinking of cutting down, maybe half for a week then a quarter for another week. Again, i have only taken the 81mg, every other day.

Connie, so everything I've heard about the benefits of vitamin E is wrong?

I'm trying to get the right balance of vitamins, and get away from the aspirin and zetia. I guess all this takes time, but getting info from the Dr.s is frustrating.

Thanks so much for the responses.

Lenin, Thank you so much for all the info. I'm off the vitamins, staying on aspirin every other day. Decided to stay on metoprolol. I'm thinking that the coreg could come with it's own set of problems, and I should just stay with what I'm taking. I stopped the zetia and the dizziness is subsiding, thankfully. Nosebleeds are not as frequent either. Could be weather related, heat in the house etc. Anyway, i just wanted to say thank you for all of your replies to my questions. I appreciate it very much.
