Newly diagnosied with asthma (Asthma board)

21st December 2005
I was just tested and through the whole 9 yards with allergy/lung test. The reason for my visit to the doctor's was because I get a horrible attack when I go back to Iowa for Christmas to visit my husband's family (I currently live in southern California). We stay at my husband's dad's place where there is a cat. The doctor said that that I am allergic to cat's per the allergy "p-r-i-c-k" test results, nothing else really came up (oak tree & sweet gum flared-up a little). I have had a cat for 11 years, my parent's have a cat, my past roommates have had cats, and I have NEVER had a reaction ANYTHING close to what I get when I go to my in-laws back to Iowa.

I really have a hard time believing that I have asthma because of his dad's cat. I run, play sports and don't really run out of breath (I get runner's cramp before I run out of breath). Also, the ONLY time that I have a reaction is when I go back for Christmas and I would say that my symptoms are asthmatic. I just do not understand why this cat is the ONLY one that I react to so violently that I have an asthma attack, again I have NEVER had an attack from a cat before in my life. Is it possible that I am allergic to something other than my in-law's cat, something very rare inside their house that the doctor missed? I just don't want to take Advair & Xopenex, I don't like taking medications. Please help me, I don't know much at all about asthma.
