Ultram Addiction and Withdrawl (Addiction & Recovery board)

16th April 2003
Well,
I am taking the plunge and talking about this, after reading other posts. I could use a little help with Ultram. I have been taking 2-6 a day for 2 years, and it doesn't seem like much since it is within the recommended doseage, but I know I have a problem. When I try to completely quit, or even when I take only 2, I get these weird muscle twitches. Is that part of withdrawal, or is it psychological? I managed to quit once, and I felt happy about it, but it was the pain that drove me back. I've tried Vioxx and Robaxin for the pain instead, hoping that if I alternated with another med I wouldn't get re-addicted. Neither of those helped the pain, however, and even though I was free of the Ultram addiction I went back on it to avoid the pain. So, what can I do to both get off the Ultram and to control the pain while I'm off it? I think I can learn to manage the anxiety and muscle twitches if I taper off, but the low back pain I have is another matter. The pain is so severe that I will give in. Vicodan does work for my pain, but I can't work while taking it, and I am afraid of addiction to that too. Does anyone have suggestions on what I could take as an alternative, and any other tips on how to get through the muscle twitch stuff? I have a prescription for Xanax that I have never had addiction problems with because I only need it on rare occasions. Could I use the Xanax to control the muscle twitches for a few days until the Ultram is out of my system? Well, here it is, I'm asking for help with this for the first time as hard as that may be.
