ED & vacuum pump (Cancer: Prostate board)

26th March 2004
I recently underwent RRP and, for the time being at least, am effectively impotent So far Viagra has had very little effect but if/as nerves heal it may get better. At 47 I'm not ready to give up on sex but the available treatments (injections, penile suppositories etc.) hold little appeal. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had experience with vacuum pumps. I understand they are usually effective but many men abandon them because they're inconvenient and may cause pain or bruising. To me it sounds more appaealing than the pain and inconvenience of a needle in my penis but that's just me. Any comments or advice?

Good Morning - I had RRP surgery July 2, 2003 at the age of 49. Not exactly what I had planned. I lost the nerves on both sides. Initially my hope was to be cancer free and I did not worry about sexual issues. Fortunately I did not and still do not have major issues with continence.

My uro is also a friend so he has been very helpful. He recognized depression and started me on an anti depressant which really helped. After 4 months, I was just plain old horny. Yes - we can have an orgasm without an erection.

Viagra and the likes did nothing for me - my blood pressure went so low with levitra I was fighting to stay conscious. My uro prescribed a VED for me. I took it slow and cautiously - NO PROBLEMS!! It was paid for by my insurance company. On line, I found another one that I like better.

Follow the directions - practice privately when there is no pressure - expect failure and disappointment but keep at it.

After 9 months, I am getting to the point that I am having half erections with no assistance - that certainly helps my moral.

Finding someone my age to share with has been difficult!
