synthorid vs levothyroxine question (Thyroid Disorders board)

8th March 2007
bookishmomma is correct ... for treatment of hypothyroid disorder, you (and your doc) should insist on a brand name. Synthroid, Levothroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid are the major brands in the U.S. Any of those are fine unless the filler causes an allergic reaction (rare).

Get the doc to put "Do not switch brands" on the prescription, whichever brand he prescribes, and then do not let the pharmacy switch. It's ok to switch from the generic to the brand name now, much better to make the switch now than to try to deal with a switch later when you're all tweaked.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns, sounds like he knows what he is doing and he is the one who knows your entire medical picture.

It could be, yes.

Levothyroxine is the generic name of the T4 hormone. The four brands I know about in the U.S. are: Synthroid (the one your doctor prescribed), Levoxyl (Amy takes that), Levothroid (I take that) and Unithroid (I believe Meep said he takes that).

Every 75 mcg Synthroid tablet will be very consistent with another 75 mcg Synthroid tablet. Every 75 mcg Levoxyl tablet will be very consistent with another 75 mcg Levoxyl tablet. Same for Levothroid. Same for Unithroid. Same for Brand A generic levothyroxine. Same for Brand B generic levothyroxine. And Brands C-X.

However, a 75 mcg Synthroid tablet will probably differ enough with a 75 mcg tablet of any other brand, generic or not, to make a difference to you if you get leveled and then get switched. If a 75 mcg Synthroid tablet contains more levothyroxine hormone than the Brand F generic levothyroxine your pharmacy switched to, you could very well have felt that difference.

Calore, Euthyrox and Eltroxin (Canadian, I think) are other brand names for the T4 hormone, levothyroxine. Euthyrox, Eltroxin, Synthroid, Levothroid, Levoxyl, and Unithroid are just different brand names for the same hormone. I don't think it matters which one you take as long as you stick with the same brand.

Your TSH is too high and your FT3 too low, IMO. I think you need a dose increase, a leveling period and another lab. If you search posts on my name, you'll see that's how I finally got better. Dose. Adjust. Lab. Dose increase. Adjust. Lab. Dose increase .... like that until now when I can say I feel rather great for a 62-year-old woman. :)

Erinbeth
I am going through the process of dose.adjust.lab.dose adjust and maybe I am just being impatient. This all started in Jan06 which I suppose isnt that long ago but I am not my 'ole self' . You know how frustrating that is  I have to think in advance how I am going to do a.b.c. as I just get fatigued too easily
I thought I had an 'on the ball' endo ( who lives hours and hours away) who wanted me with a TSH of 1-2 and the other day when she knew it was 3.5+ she said, thats normal :dizzy:
Very strange I think.
I really appreciate your input.
Is there a chat room for folks like us in cyber space?

THANKS again for your patience too
Carol
