Need but can't tolerate thyroid meds (Thyroid Disorders board)

[FONT="Lucida Console"][COLOR="Navy"]Thanks for providing more information, Mary Rose. No apologies needed. You write clearly and remember paragraphing. Your post was interesting and easy to read. More info helps the reader get a better grasp. :)

As for what to do, I think you are on the right track. You realize you have worsening and classic hypothyroid symptoms and you have a doctor appointment scheduled.

I suggest taking a list of those and your history with you. Give the doctor as clear a picture as you have given us. Some people even mail a description of the symptoms and a brief of any history that doctor wouldn't know ahead of time or provide a copy at the appointment.

From now on, get a hard copy of all labs done and keep them for your records. You are entitled to those by law. If they don't automatically provide them, request them.

In regard to your "feeling hyper" on Synthroid, your description sounded more like you were just going through the misery of leveling. Also, you may be one who needs to start off low and build up very gradually. To some degree most of us have to tough out the periods between dose increases, not surprising if you would, too.

In that regard, I suggest the "toughing out" period last six to eight weeks, longer as you get closer to your target lab results. I went through a number of these periods over ten months or so. Toward time for a lab I would start to see some benefit. Then a lab and a dose increase and a few days later I would be miserable again until almost time for a lab when I would start to feel a little better than I had before and then another lab ... you get the picture? ;)

[COLOR="Navy"]Realize there is a difference between "feeling hyper" and actually being hyper. The key here, I think, is that your heart rate and blood pressure were fine. Describe this to the doctor as well as you can, but my guess is that your body was just trying to adjust or, possibly, something in the fillers for Synthroid was an issue for you.

You could always ask to try a different brand. I take Levothroid myself and I have heard others who felt reactive to Synthroid have an easier time with Levoxyl. And there is always Unithroid.

Just make sure it is a brand name, that the doctor writes the prescription to specify no switching on whatever brand he prescribes.

Keep us updated. We'll help and encourage all we can. :)
