Is my bf an addict? (Addiction & Recovery board)

4th May 2007
Hi all,

I feel a bit shy about posting but I am so worried about my bf and need some advice.

We only met 2 months ago (we are both 50 years old) and during that time my bf told me he was in a bad accident at work 7 years ago. He has damage to his back and takes the following meds for pain and for depression and anxiety:

Fentanyl Patch 75, Vicodins, Gabapentin, Klonopin, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, and Trazodone.

Well, our relationship got to the point where he was staying over at my house for 3 days at a time and I noticed that he would act happy and loving the 1st day, and by day 3, he would get very quiet to the point where I could not talk to him. He would shut me out completely and when he did talk he verbally put me down, gets sarcastic and acts like a totally different person. After 2 months of this I saw the same pattern.

I am so confused. I never met anyone who took so many meds before. I read a bit about bipolar personality and he fits some of it, but is it his personality or is it a side effect of his meds?

He is very intelligent, has a good heart, likes to help people, so many good qualities. Yet when his mood changes for the worse, I don't want to be around him. He also can be an impulsive spender. I honestly don't know what to do.

I talked to him about the possibility of him being an addict and he is in complete denial. His only answer is that he needs these meds for his back pain.

Any advice?
Sunny
