GERD & Lotrel.... (High & Low Blood Pressure board)

30th June 2004
I think I found the source of my stomach problems in the morning...

Reflux Disease (GERD)
Reflux Disease (GERD) Causes

No one knows the exact cause of gastroesophageal reflux. The following are several contributing factors that weaken or relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making reflux worse:

* Lifestyle - Use of alcohol or cigarettes, obesity, poor posture (slouching)

* Medications - Calcium channel blockers, theophylline (Tedral, Hydrophed, Marax, Bronchial, Quibron), nitrates, antihistamines

* Diet - Fatty and fried foods, chocolate, garlic and onions, drinks with caffeine, acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, spicy foods, mint flavorings

* Eating habits - Eating large meals, eating soon before bedtime

They say that some aspects of GERD are a dry cough, which I have at night & an acid-like taste in the morning, which I have sometimes.

Taking 5/20 Lotrel, which can cause GERD & 100 MG. of Atenolol, which can cause nausea is a brutal combination. No wonder I feel like junk on so many meds.

Like I said, yesterday my b/p was 115/65 in the brutal sun. I never had these problems before the meds. As soon as my new insurance kicks in next week, I want off of the Lotrel & any other calcium channel blocker. I couldn't believe this when I read it.

I take verapamil and i have suffered gerds. But verapamil was not the cause of my gerds. Celebrex was the cause for me. I'm glad you found out the problem and is able to correct it before real damage is done.

I'm not sure that I have it, but 2-3 days during the week my stomach feels like junk in the mornings. My new insurance kicks in within a week, so I'll go over it with the doc. I swear that some B/P meds. do more harm than good.

* Lifestyle - Use of alcohol or cigarettes, obesity, poor posture (slouching)

I smoke & have poor posture at times. I stopped drinking to excess after drinking a 6 pack a night from 22-32. I'm 33 now. My AST was like 16 & my ALT was 20, so it isn't my liver.

* Medications - Calcium channel blockers, theophylline (Tedral, Hydrophed, Marax, Bronchial, Quibron), nitrates, antihistamines

I take a high dose of Lotrel, so this fits.

* Diet - Fatty and fried foods, chocolate, garlic and onions, drinks with caffeine, acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, spicy foods, mint flavorings

Doesn't really apply to me. I'm 5 '11 154 or so & stay away from these foods.

* Eating habits - Eating large meals, eating soon before bedtime

My girlfriend & I don't eat at home too often & it is mostly an hour or so before we go to sleep, so this applies.

I'm going to get this checked out. I have felt like this from time to time for months on Lotrel 5/20 & Toprol 100 MG (which has been replaced by Atenolol).

Why I am on so many meds. when all of my tests are perfect is beyond me. My B/P runs from 109/65 to 125/80 (on a day when it is 95 outside & I walk 1/2 mile). I take 2-3 mgs of xanax for anxiety, but it does much more for me than these b/p meds. that screw up my insides.....
