Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole (Thyroid Disorders board)

8th May 2008
It seems like endos forget what they say half the time, mine seems to contradict himself at times. It took 6 months after testing to finally put me on tapazole. He thought it was sub-acute thyroiditis at first, cause my levels changed a little on their own, he did more tests, thyroid uptake scan and decided Iwould do well on a little tapazole. I only took 2.5 at first. I was on that for about 7 months or so, and I stopped it for a couple of weeks. That's another story, anyway I was raised to 5 after that cause he thought the tsh was down too much. I saw him at first in April of 06 then July, then he put me on meds the end of August. It's good he's seeing you in 4 weeks, levels can sometimes change fast and you can go from one end to the other. make sure at each visit to get copies of your labwork, so you can track yourself. It'll show the lab ranges and where you are in them. You'll soon learn to know the levels by heart almost and you'll know what's hyper and hypo. Good luck!

you say you were on Synthroid? Why didn't he just lower the dose, why did he put you on Tapazole? You aren't hyper are you, you're hypo, right? I mean you started off hypo?

I've been lurking... sorry to butt in on a subject I know very little about - hyperT.
But to me, your free Ts don't look at all hyper. Do you think so, GravesGirl? The FT4 could actually be considered on the hypo side. Doesn't one or the other have to be high in the range or above to be considered hyper?

I mean, low TSH alone doesn't make one hyperT, does it? I would be leaning more toward pituitary dysfunction causing the hypOthyroidism. Have you been checked for that, Keystone? I think that would explain your coldness and other hypo-like symptoms. I'd be reluctant to take Tapazole until someone proved to me... using his own voice, to be sure... that I was actually hyperthyroid. I'm not at all sure you are.
