PPI's and digestion (Acid Reflux board)

1st March 2007
[QUOTE=Kenben00;2831054]Hi, I just wanted to weigh in on this. I have had the exact same thing for the past 5 months. I have even said I don't want to live with this pressure. It is the most awful thing I have experienced. I saw a ER doctor who said take tylenol and said I had slept wrong. Then I saw a general practicioner and he sent me to an ear nose and throat doctor. He had me do a barillium swallow test, which is a video x-ray that follows this liquid you swallow down your throat. Results were normal and he referred me to a GI doctor for follow up. The ENT said it was a carciophegial spasm which is the flap that holds food down basically has a charlie horse and that it would go away. After a few more months of suffering I finally went to see the GI. He just treats me like I don't know what I'm talking about. First without even touching me he prescibed me Prilosec and told me it was acid reflux. After two weeks on that and no releif I went back. Yesterday I had a endoscopy and that came back clear. I am really frustrated now. He told me to continue the prilosec so I guess I do have acid reflux. One thing that I started taking that seems to help is sinus medication. So maybe it is sinus pressure. But it feels like I have a second adam's apple just below my adams apple. Do you have this. Please let me know if you have any success with anything and I will do the same.

thanks

I am a woman and I know the feeling in the throat you are speaking of. You know, oddly - and I don't know why this happens but acid reflux can aggravate your sinus and cause all kinds of yucky post nasal symptoms. There's a chance too that the Prilosec isn't your drug. Try asking for Protonix or Nexium. The may work better for you. In addition to that, next time you have the lump feeling in your throat, try this little and harmless experiment... Get some plain saline spray from the drug store in the sinus and allergy section. Use it as a rinse for your sinus. Squirt 2 sprays up into each nostril and then blow it out. Do this whenever you feel that sensation for a day or two and see if that changes anything.

I for one, had sinus and asthma problems for several years. I developed adult asthma when I was 30. I just found out this month after a bunch of tests that my allergy symptoms and asthma were from the acid reflux!!! so now i'm on prilosec and it seems to be helping! I quit my asthma pills, "singulair" when I started the prilosec and have not had any more problems - with the exception to the days where my reflux is really bad. I'm taking the prilosec twice a day, once in the morning and again a few hours before before bed.
