Has anyone tried Singulair? (Acid Reflux board)

6th January 2007
I'm on Singulair for asthma, and it works well, but I don't see how it would help LPR. Granted, I have GERD and know very little about LPR.

Hi am on Singulair for Asthma and Allergies. I am on Prevacid 2x/day for the LPR. I am not sure how the Singulair would help the LPR. I assume your doctor has good reasons for prescribing it though.

hi, well my gi doc says he thinks it could be an allergy that is causing the sore throat (officially called eosinophilic esophagitis) and that could be causing some reflux. so thus the singulair to reduce the inflammation. if you are on singulair already plus the prevacid - do you think maybe you don't need the prevacid? have you ever tried stopping it to see if the singulair alone is enough?

I was on the Singulair first. It was prescribed for my Asthma as well as my allergies. I was also on Allegra-D, Flonase and Astelin for my allergies. (I already finished a round of immunotherapy prior to going on the Singulair.) It was about a year later that I was also diagnosed with the acid problem. I had a PH test to confirm it. That was when I went on the double dose PPI.

The combination of treatments helps me because the asthma and acid problems seem to aggrevate each other. Whenever I have problems with one, it sets off problems with the other. The dual treatment helps me get them under control together.

By the way, I have the same symptom for both conditions---a chronic dry cough.

my allergy doc said my eosinophils in my GI biopsy were borderline high. eosinophilic esophagitis can cause heartburn and lpr so he wants me to try singulair. are you having any side effects from it?

I personally notice no side effects from singulair. It's an anti-inflammatory, so I can see how it would help with esophagitis.

I wouldn't recommend singular instead of prevacid, since they do totally different things.

I have taken prevacid for 4-5 years for reflux. started taking singulair and zyrtec 4 years ago for asthma and allergies. just dx with esophageal spams so after all these years on prevacid and singulair I can't see how either helps the spasms since i just acquired them. have been prescribed bentyl recently with no good coming from it. what I have noticed is eliminating alot of different foods one by one. I have multiple food allergies but since having my gallbladder out I've noticed i have had to cut out even more foods from my diet as they really effect me. Good luck to all.
