Have a friend with Alzheimer, was declining quickly, to point would not talk much, on verge of renal failure, in hospice. She is taking Excelon and Namenda. Got new doctor who also prescribed Sinemet, because he thought she had Parkinson, although I never saw any symptoms normally associated with Parkinson. She is back on her feet, pushing her wheelchair, and carries a conversation. Did some research and found out that this med acts as Dopamine in brain. In the frontal lobes, dopamine controls the flow of information from other areas of brain. Dopamine disorders in this region of the brain can cause decline in neurocognitive functions, especailly memory, attention, and problem-solving. My mom has had Alzheimer for about 10 years and is declining quickly, she is at point where she can't make a sentence and needs 24 hour watch/care. So, was wondering if anyone has had experience with this or similar meds helping patients with Alzheimer, if it is used just for Parkinson or also for Alzheimer. Plan to take Mom for second opinion and see if doctor will prescribe Sinemet (her current neurologist told us there is nothing else they can do for her). Thanks.
