Second time Trying to Quit Opiates with MEDS... Do they HELP??? (Addiction & Recovery board)

4th August 2007
This is my second time trying to overcome my addiction to Hydrocodone/Oxycodone....

I recently saw a specialist who I forked $350 cash over to to just write me a bunch of scrips to aid in my "detox" / "recovery"

Well he perscribed me SEROQUEL 50 MG Tablets, CLONIDINE TABLETS
0.2 MG * generic for Catapres* and CYANOCOBALAMIN 1000 MCG/ML. INJECTIONS... as well as a TESTOSTERONE INJECTION which I have to wait until I get my blood results back from ******* before I can get my scrip. ( I guess by law it is required before receiving the Perscription).. at least here in the sity of sin (damn it to hell) , Las Vegas, NV.

Anyway today is day FOUR of taking the Seroquel ( 1 tablet in the morning and two at bed time), Clonidine ( 1 tab twice a day) and the injections.. Twice a week * just had my 2nd yesterday *...... All I have to say is that I am completely exhausted!!! I feel a little bit of energy as each day goes by, but otherwise I feel so weak, like I just want to take endless naps.. And needless to say I am also constipated so I started taking some Metamucil.

I just want to know if anyone else has taken this road to recovery and if I will soon get some of my energy back. I stopped taking the SEROQUEL in the morning and just take it at night now.... I am glad that my girlfriend is seeing a glmipse and sparks of the old me coming back.. I just want my damn energy, I want to be able to do daily tasks without thinking about how hard it is to walk to the car... I can't wait until my life is fully back in order and I can shake this horrible Addiction. Anyway, Like I said, this is just day 4... Does anyone have any suggestions on getting some energy back?

I was also concerned when and how do I ween myself off of the Clonidine and Seroquel, and B12 Injections???

Hello Phoe

Glad to read of your renewed effort. This is good.

Phoe, it seems like you want to stop your addiction sincerely, but are not quite sure why you are taking the meds and what each should do for you. I am no doctor... I had no idea about a couple of things you wrote you were taking! I did a real quick net search on what I did not understand and only have surface understanding. I suggest you do some in depth searching online this weekend and on Monday, get into the doctor and ask questions!!!
If the first attempt failed, it might be that you are attempting detox with your heart and forgetting to include your mind. If you want recovery to happen, know that recovery is about knowledge in the mind much, much more so than a desire in the heart.

Limited surface knowledge I found in about three minutes of online research:

Seroquel is an antidepressant... you MUST take it as prescribed. Depression will increase off the oxycodone ( believe me... I know this part well... I happened to come off oxycodone also). Antidepressants take 4-6 weeks to totally kick in,, but little improvements will be seen along the way. Stop self-medicating and taking meds as you choose... we both know where that practice got us with opiates. You paid this guy big bucks for his expertise and guidance... don't go thinking you are smarter than he is now, especially when some proof has already been seen in your getting better as witnessed by your girlfriend.

Clonodine is for blood pressure... it helps keep it at a more noormal level in detoxing. The anxiety felt during detox is all a part of high blood pressure as the body fights us during detox. If you have tried before, then you know how bad the anxiety levels can get. It has also stopped the horrible sweats and flashes for many members on this board and is a common helper med for this time. I happened to be on a blood pressure med before detox because of a heart attack. This is NOT a med you can just stop abruptly... dangerous to do so. The doctor will take you down when the time is right and you will not feel withdrawals from it ( just like we seldom feel high blood pressure... hypertension is the 'silent killer."

The B-12... higher doses than normal are needed of the complex B's. They help to protect the heart more during this time and all kinds of other things. Read the Sample Home Detox Thread at the top of the threads on this board. There are many things there to help duribng this time and as well as being good for us in recovery and life in general. Do not take the St John's Wort as it has bad interactions with antidepressant medications. Check all with the doctor first... I have used muc (and still use) the supplements listed in the sample.

Testoterone... this is what really had me stumped and took 2 of the 3 minutes I researched. Chuckles. I searched testoterone AND addiction and the first article hit the homer for me. Opiate addiction causes a lowering of testosteron ( of many hormones actually). Too high a level can cause aggression and anger (that's why I was confused). However, studies have now shown that too low a level can cause severe emotional sadness in men especially. I guess that is why the bloodtest has to be done. The doctor needs a reading on your testoterone levels before having you take the med. Think it was just a courtesy to give you the script when you were at the office so a second trip wouldn't be needed.

Phoe... sitting here it looks like your doc knows exactly what he is doing. Now you need to know! Write down the questions you asked here and ask him those questions. He can answer everything from a medical standpoint. On the board, we can help a lot with the emotional type questions.

The energy does come back, but it is slow in doing so. In a week or so, you will probably feel better physically. Force yourself to move.. walk at least, help with housework like laundry and vacuuming.. movement of any kind will help speed the process of detox and help us feel better. Dance with your girlfriend or shake your booty to some oldies all by yourself.... go get a Richard Simmons video! Hahahaha... Shaking to the Oldies!

Good wished... keep us posted.

Hey Phoe - I just wanted to make a comment on Seroquel. My Dr. prescribed it for me and I was instructed to take it only in the morning. It knocked me out so bad I couldn't move. After doing some research I found that most people take it in the evening only because it can have a sedative effect. Everyone is different and you should speak with your Dr. as Reach said.

Hang in there!!!! :)

Sunshine,

Ya, It definitely makes me tired.. but since I am taking the CLONIDINE and the SEROQUEL, I don't know which one is making me more tired.

I told my doc I was having trouble with my day to day functioning so He told me to just take the TWO SEROQUEL at night, and to cut out the ONE in the morning. He then told me just to take it in the morning if " I felt I was having a BAD day" haha. Anyway.. I just hope that with taking both meds my body will adjust and allow normal energy levels.
