How bad is it to take Ambien during opiate W/Ds? (Addiction & Recovery board)

21st March 2007
Hey folks,

I know everybody says not to take certain sleeping pills during W/Ds because it can prolong the W/Ds, etc... Of course, the trade off is that at least I sleep at night when I take Ambien. My doc recommended Seroquel, Nuerontin, and/or Trazod as alternatives.

Anybody have any knowledge on if any of the above 3 actually help with sleep during opiate W/Ds? Also, if you have any knowledge of how bad of an idea it is to take Ambien while detoxing?

Thx in advance.

I'm on day 12 of coming off Sub and am surprised that it's still as rough as it is. I have my good times & bad times, but definitely more bad times it seems. I can deal with the depression because I just keep reminding myself that it's artificial and will go away, but what gets me is the lack of energy. After walking up the stairs, I feel like a 60 yr old man (I'm 31). Obviously there isn't much motivation to get out and do things. I try not to stay in the house, but going places isn't easy because of the lack of energy. For those who know, will the lack of energy begin to go away faster than the depression or do they last about the same amount of time?

As for sleeping, I have been taking Ambien to help because I know I'd only be getting a couple of hours per night if I wasn't taking them. I will run out in another 2-3 days and won't be refilling the prescription, so I will be forced to use the couple of other things the doc prescribed (Seroquel & Nuerontin). My thoughts on Ambien are what somebody said earlier in this thread... I would rather use them to help at night during the opiate W/Ds even if it prolongs the W/Ds a few extra days. I've taken Ambien 10 days in a row before being overseas a few years back and had no trouble when I got home and stopped taking them. You just have to be careful and not take them too long, but they can be a lifesaver for some at a time like this.

hey-
just wanted to share my experience with you. I understand the idea of actually sleeping through the night is a novel concept-- it was for me for a while. I used to be up at 2am and that was it.

for sleep, I've tried all three of them.

Seroquel--- works wonders for me. I take 300 mgs at night and sleep right on through. Seroquel is used by rehab hospitals to work with anxiety. The great thing about it is that it's not habit forming. I prefer Seroquel over trazodone.I sleep through the night and if i have to use the bathroom, im asleep in like 5 minutes after.

Trazodone-- I took this for a long time in college and it worked great. However, it does come with a morning hangover effect. It too is also non addictive and works for a lot of people.

Neurontin-- I don't take this for sleep but for anxiety...again also non addictive.

I think the pattern is non addictive.....try these if you want!

be well,

stress
