I can't get my doctors to give me anything for pain! (Fibromyalgia board)

30th May 2004
Fibro Girl-
Here Here! Some Dr's are absolutely clueless and jerks! They do not seem to understand that some days you have to have something for the pain just to get through. My Dr last week said she thinks my real problem is that I'm addicted to pain medication. I was so completely caught off guard I just started sobbing and couldn't shut up. She continued by saying I was a completely different person from when she first started seeing me last summer. (Could it be that I am in so much pain that I can hardly think and walking to the bathroom completely tires me out?) What the hell? Mind you the first time she saw me was after a car accident where she prescribed 80 Lortab three different times. I had 3 car accidents last year all 1 month a part. On the last wreck she just didn't beleive me. She actually called me when I was in the ER and said she found it hard to beleive I was in another wreck. I faxed her a copy of all 3 wrecks the next day. I should have known right then to change Dr's. So last week when I went in expecting compassion, advice, and a dx she only emphasized the depression I was already experiencing. She asked me what I was going to do about work and I explained I had applied for ST disability and the papers were being faxed to her. She told me that I would have to come back in for that. What for? Because she would need to know when the symptoms started, etc. If she would have listened to me, I had all that written out in detail. I tried to give them to her and she just stared at me. I also asked her to give me a note to stay out of work until the end of the week. She replied that she could only give me one for the day I was there. (Gee thanks) She did give me a RX for vicoprofen but I told her that I didn't want another RX from her. Needless to say, I have changed PCP's hopefully, to one that will listen to my symptoms and provide adequate treatment. It's not so much that I want pain meds, it's that I want to know what is going on with my body. My main concern is the fatigue. If it's not fibro, what is it? Is it the side effect of Seroquel? Is it the liver imflammation? Just what? Right now, I was instructed to not even take advil or tylenol because of the liver imflammation. So what CAN I take besides what they have given me. I realize that Dr's do have to worry about addiction but, they need to have some compassion for someone who is in pain.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Sorry for rambling but, I feel a little bitter as well. Thanks for tuning in.

Hi Molly...I was reading your post and does the doc have you taking
Seroquel for depression ? .....in answer to your question yes this med is
notorious for causing fatique,an overall, sluggish, blah feeling for most
patients..I guess I am surprised that this med is being used as opposed
to a standard SSRI -such as paxil, zoloft, prozac, etc for the depression.
I am sorry that your doc was such a jerk when it came to treating your
pain..I guess I somewhat surprised daily when I read some of the posts
and hear what obstacles people face from their medical providers in
trying to obtain adequate pain relief...I have been trying to think of some
suggestions for you and about the only thing I have come up with is
possibly since you are now getting a new PCP you could try keeping a pain
journal daily, letting your new PCP know how pain has restricted your daily
activities, what your expectations of your pain management would be..i.e
not that you expect total relief but some relief to let you resume your
normal daily activities,etc..hope this helps as I felt really bad about how
you were treated by your old doc..

Thanks for your feedback. I have started keeping a daily journal of pain, food, and drug/vitamin intake. I record duration and pain level and where. I am only praying that this new Dr will at least listen to me. The next hurdle I am trying to overcome is getting the Dr to approve ST disability. Maybe just a week or 2 more. My pain is becoming more manageable but the fatique is extreme. I was taking the seroquel for bi-polar disorder to help with sleep and agitation. It was being substituted in for Risperdal. I have stopped taking the med and maybe that's why my pain is not as severe as last week. Don't get me wrong, the pain is still about a 6 on the pain scale but, last week it was a 100! I couldn't even stand myself. I really think and hope the problem has been caused by the med.
