SA vs LA meds (Pain Management board)

18th August 2007
I am currently on 90 mgs of Roxicet per day (30 mg x 3). I also take Loricet 10/650 as needed up to 4 times per day.

I get really good relief however, it doesn't last more than 3 1/2 hrs anymore. I used to be able to take it and it would last up to 7 hours. I only use the loricet for flare ups.

My question is I am seeing my doctor on Tuesday. Should I tell him I need another pill per day or should we discuss long acting meds. I am kinda scared to change meds. I have no side effects from the oxycodone, the only apap I get is from the loricet. I don't want to feel drugged - I hate that!! and I don't want to start using my breakthrough as a crutch to get me through the day. That is not what they are for.

One of my thoughts though is maybe the patch. I hate clock watching. If I were to do that, what mcg should I start at.

Thanks for your help.

No, I had the brand name oxycontin - 20mg, 3 times per day. At the time I had decent insurance, so I had the doc write it DAW. I have had some problems with generics in the past, so my doctor always writes DAW when trying me on a new med.

I just felt really horrible on them and with the 30 mg roxicet, I just get pain relief.

The 30 mg oxycodone doesn't have any apap in it and although the loricet I take for breakthrough does, I don't take enough for the apap to be a problem.
Plus, I am only 43 and I don't want to "max out" in pain meds so that there is nothing else left to "bump" up to.

I am not really sure what I am going to do. I have been compliant with every modality that the doc has had me try. Some help and some don't. And I really would like to try a LA med, so I can quit clock watching. I don't like having to plan my activities around taking my meds.

What do you guys/gals think? Should I have him up my 30mg to 4 times per day or should I try something LA.

Thanks

Lizzie
