posting about dad (Addiction & Recovery board)

5th September 2006
hi,
i am posting about my dad. he is 66 yrs old. i am 29 yrs old. i hope it is o.k for me to post. i grew up with dad being a abusive ( mentally) alcoholic. i have had horrible panic attacks since i was a young girl . i honestly prayed for something to happen so he would quit. it did he had 3 heart attacks . he would not have surgury. that was 13 yrs ago. he did well for a couple months. then he found out about pain pills. well it has been bad ever since. he is not emotionally mean no more he just completely depends on me. it is like i have a 66 yr old kid. well this march the unthinkable happened he over dosed. we called a ambulance he would not get up. my sister tried to help me wake him . when she raisedhim up clear like fluid came out of his mouth. he was on life support for 2 days. he woke up very confused and he really talked off. he tested positive for four different drugs. the doctor told me dad had damaged alot of his liver. i cried and told my dad he had to change his ways or he would die. the first couple weeks was like having a new dad. well he is doing it again. methadone , percocet, a pill called roxicet, muscle relaxers. my dad's liver has made him lose alot of weight. i worry all the time. my mom had breast cancer. he was not able to be there for her i had to. their marriage might as well not exist. i never had kids of my own. i always had to pull my dad's weight. like taking mom to doctors , to the store etc. she does not drive. how do i help my dad quit when he does not care? i know he has depression. his brother did to. he commited suicide yrs ago. i am sorry this has been so long. it seems like you all can relate to some of this. thanks for listening.

Hi Tawyna:If you can get the percocets and roxicets away from him and just give him the methadone he would fare much better. If you can get him on a stable dose of methadone then he will be as normal as you and me.There is no tylenol in methadone and methadone doesn't hurt any major orgins after short or long term use.Why would any doctor order him all of those opiates especially the one with tylenol in it.The roxicet is strait hydrocodone I think, then you have perocet which is oxycodone with tylenol and then you have methadone. All these drugs taken together in an abusive manner are going to cause your dad all kinds of trouble. Can you talk with his doctor and tell him what's going on,this is a serious problem that could even lead to his death by accidental od.....Dave
