I spoil TV programmes for everyone else! (ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder board)

14th January 2008
I've never heard of success with hypno therapy for ADD. That's not to say it couldn't work, but I don't recommend it.

What does often work? Some people benefit from changes in diet. I have a friend, very smart, skeptical lady, who swears eliminating artificial colors has helped her brain function dramatically. Many people find omega-3 fatty acids can help. If you don't eat fish much, try eating more of it.

Regular exercise produces certain chemical changes in the brain which also reduce the effects of ADD/ADHD. I definitely rely on this treatment, as side effects may include a trim waistline, strong body, and better sleep!:)

Also, you might look into coaching. There are professional ADD coaches and tutors out there, some of whom specialize in adults. They can possibly teach you some techniques to keep your life together.

And then there are prescription drugs. They might be right for you, might not. All I'm going to say is that if you try them and don't like them, you can always just stop taking them. I took them for a couple years, learned how to concentrate, and now I only take them a few times a year, for "special" occasions when I need to spend many hours working at something I find particularly hard to concentrate on. They do, of course, have some down sides.

By the way, ordinary caffeine has many of the same effects as ritalin or adderall, and morning coffee doesn't carry the same stigma as prescription psych meds. Just a thought.
