Reglan and reflux (Acid Reflux board)

2nd May 2008
Hi Flowergirl,

Reglan is different from Nexium. I'm not sure if you can get it in Canada but it's probable not something you should take without being under the care of a Dr. The generic name is: metoclopramide

This will be the next one I get from the Gastro Dr. For some reason, he was hesitant to prescribe it to me unless he was left with no other options. I am at that point now so we'll see at the next visit.

Canyon,

Are you using a PPI in conjunction with your motility drug?

Flowergirl,

I noticed you are from Canada, as am I. My doctor just precribed for me a drug called domperidone. It is similar to Reglan but has far fewer side effects. This is a drug that our friends in the U.S. don't have access to. I think it hasn't been approved there. It is also a motility drug, and is supposed to move food through the stomach faster so you have fewer digestion-related problems. The Nexium alone wasn't working really well for me anymore so I just got a prescription for the domperidone and started taking it yesterday. I'm also still taking two 20 mg Nexiums per day. I'm hoping this is the answer!

In Canada the one I take is called Motilium and it is available by prescription. In the rest of the world except the US it is available over the counter. My regular Dr. who I saw yesterday and is from India is not familiar with it but I wanted him to know i was taking it adn I am sending him the info on it just to be sure. It works the same as Reglan. My Gastro who is Indian but not from India is the one that knew of it and he said the only reason it is not in the US is that it is so cheap now after being on the market for so many years there would be no money in it to go thru the FDA approvals. It is made by a large Pharmaceutical company. I don't think anyone should take anything without discussing it with their Doctor and certainly not from something that anyone on any forum says but it is something that I would suggest you talk to you Doctor about trying. Since they give the one I am taking to Mothers nursing babies in larger quantities to increase milk supply I personally felt it must be safe but what is safe for one person is not for another so caveat emptor or however you spell it.

Kassie,

Antibiotics are a HUGE CULPRIT for worsening or even causing GERD and reflux. I too have this problem and am suffering BADLY right now. My Prevacid is not helping.

Went to a health food store for the first time and was given Probiotics - I too ate Probiotic yogurt but was told by the staff that there is not nearly enough - I bought one with 15 million bacteria in it??? Anyway they recommeded one with 30 million but as I had never taken it before I decided to start low and increase it :) :) Its just one pill a day so once this 30 day supply is done I will increase it to the 30 mill. one that they recommended.

I believe that my GERD is being affected by Candida (overgrowth of yeast) that was brought on by my use of steroid asthma medication and a round of Zithromax for bronchitis. Hoping that I can get my body 'back in balance' and it will calm things back down.

Beside the Probiotic they recommended 'digestive enzymes' (since I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago) -- and a low carb diet for the next couple of months. I started the Probiotics 5 days ago, one more week and I will add the digestive enzymes to see if the helps (I like to add just one new thing at times). I'll let ya know.

Feel better SOON.

Canyon,

I am so glad that the Reglan is working for you - hope you feel BETTER everyday!!

That is SO FANTASTIC :) :)

Chocolate Cake - YUM :) That is my FAVORITE and the thing I miss most!!!

Do you think because the Reglan is working for you so well that your problem was slow digestion and not reflux?

Just curious what your thoughts are.

SO GLAD that you are finding relief and healing :) :)

Well, what I think is that the food was staying in my stomach so long that it was producing more acid than normally it would take for digestion. Now the transit time is more normal and since I am not bloated it doesn't back up.

Remember I don't take the Reglan but the one I take does the same thing with less side effects. Today I went out for lunch and ate ceaser salad, a half lobster tail with butter, 2 coconut shrimp, baked potato with everything, 4 cheese biscuits and wine and had not problem all day. Tonight i had cherry pie and ice cream at cards and so far no problem, no gas, no bloat, no reflux that I am aware of. I would normally have a stomach sticking out to "there". Usually go to bed that way but not lately.

I have asked in the past if this was a motility problem and was told yes but never given anything for it. Why did I have to figure this out myself. I plan to really have a chat with my Doctor.

I just cannot believe how much better you are able to eat all those WONDERFUL things and feel well. You suffered ALL THAT TIME and they did not treat you properly - how totally INFURIATING for you.

I am so glad that you are OFF the PPI's and on the right medication that is helping you. Its good that the drug has less side effects than Reglan that's great. I hope you feel better everyday!!
