Oh man I can relate to that! I am getting to the point that Cream of Wheat is too spicy!;)
I always sleep propped up to prevent acid from coming up and I try not to lay on my right side as it makes it easier for the acid to escape. I cannot eat anything spicy, no onions, no citrus (and I love lemons), no tomatoes, chocolate is a real killer, certain spices (cumin, chili powder, cinnamon), no smoked meats, bell peppers, fatty foods (especially potato chips), and commercially baked goods. If I make my own muffins they don't bother me and bananas absolutely kill me.
I wish there were some sort of surgery that really worked for GERD that insurance would cover because I would love to sleep like a normal person again. Plus it would be nice to eat something without fearing if it was gonna hurt later and not have to keep so many stomach products all around the house and in my purse.
I have found that taking 2-3 Prelief tablets before eating does help if I am eating anything like ketchup or bbq sauce. I take Nexium 40mg every morning and a 300mg Ranitidine at bedtime and mid-day.
