Too little stomach acid? (Acid Reflux board)

18th January 2008
I'm new here. First post.

I've taken Omeprazole (Prilosec) and Ranitidine (Zantac). Not
only do the two of these not seem to work for me (they don't reduce
the acid taste in the back of my throat or the tightness/swelling
in my throat one bit), but they actually seem to make my symptoms
worse. I had done web searchs for why that might be and all I
could come up with was that sometimes reflux is caused by having
too little acid. Allegedly, when you have too little acid, digestion
slows and the stomach stays full for a long time increasing the
possibility of reflux. I can't find much reliable information about
this (I ignore non-medical sites), but I did find one good page:

Has anyone ever had their gastroenterologist diagnose this?
Mine has never heard of it (I'm in the process of getting a new
one because he hasn't heard of a lot of things). I've also been
having problems with abdominal pain (upper-right quadrant, cramp-like)
that goes away after a month of taking acidophilus supplements.
Acidophilus making the abdominal pain go away implies the pain was
caused by bacterial overgrowth (I think). That seems consistent
with the achlorhydria description.
