How do you ween off of Nexium? (Acid Reflux board)

4th June 2007
[QUOTE=swig;3016863]Does anyone have any information on how to ween off of Nexium?

I've been on the maximum dose (40mg 2X/day) of PPIs (Prevacid, Zegerid, Nexium, Prilosec) for about 5 years and recently added 300mg daily of Ranitidine. I'll need to be off all acid suppression meds for a two week period to do a manometry test and then PH testing.

To get off the PPIs and H-2 blocker my GI recommended I taper off of them. Since my worst acid reflux symptoms occur in the middle of the night, he suggested I begin by stopping my morning dose of PPI, then the pre-dinner dose of PPI, and lastly the pre-bedtime H-2 blocker. He said I could take antacids during the taper period if necessary.

Hi, I've been on acid suppressing drugs (ranitidine, then prevacid, and now 40mg of nexium) for 11 years now. The nexium definately works the best, but I don't know at what cost. I have been getting progressively more fatigued (no energy at all) and muscle cramps, spasms, + tendonitis are making life extremely difficult. I credit this to these drugs. I believe because they are so effective at suppressing acid, the stomach can't absorb much needed nutrients and minerals (such as magnesium, calcium, b12 etc.) Currently, I too am trying to get off of them. -they're not supposed to be a long term thing, but my doctors don't seem to think it's a problem. I'm currently taking only half a dose (nexium) a day, and I take that in the evening. I also take HCL and digestive enzymes before every meal--as usually, it is a lack of acid that causes problems and discomfort. I currently give myself b12 injections to make up for what I can't absorb, and I'm also trying an extra virgin DME coconut oil that I'm told helps to digest, lose weight, and give energy. Haven't been taking that long enough to know if it's helping me, but I know someone who swears by it. anyhoo, I'll let you know how things go. It's seems very difficult to get off these things. I've tried a few times before, but this time I'm quite determined. good luck.
