propranolol / beta blockers (Anxiety board)

11th August 2006
just been prescribed propranolol but my doctor to treat fairly long term (3 years or so) anxiety, depression and paranioa brought on by drug use. just wondering if anyone here has had experience with this med and if it was helpful for them. ive read up a bit about it online and although i wont know till ive been on it for a while, im not sure if its the right med for me. i know its supposed to deal with the anxiety response by stopping your body releasing too much ardrenaline but it doesnt actually help calm the causes of anxiety. or am i wrong about that?
any help or advice would be appreciated. :)

edit: also meant to ask, do these meds have an instant calming effect or is it like SSRI anti-depressants when you have to wait 2-3 weeks before getting any effect? (although SSRI's had no effect on me at all)

i am on propranolol 80mg.
to be honest, i dont think it does anything to me.
it does make me feel more tired though & i find it twice as hard to get up at 6am 5 days a week then before i started taking them. you wont want to go to the gym etc as much as you did before.

hiya,

ive taken 80mg of propranolol for 2 years, and all tht they actually do is slow your heart rate down. this does come in handy when you have been having immense palpitations, which is maybe why youve been prescibed? my doc says its about time i came off them now because theyve become inaffective. i dont even notice the difference when ive taken them now.

my dosage did work after 20 minutes, and you just feel calmer, and you will want to relax.

ill keep my fingers crossed they work for you.

take care sweety,
