side effects to Antihistamine - fits and tongue thrusting (Children's Health board)

31st October 2007
My 10-month old baby is having serious side effects from taking Promethazine (prescribed by a doctor who is not aware that Promethazine should not be given to infants below 2 years). She has fits and tongue thrusting. She has since seen a neuro, and her MRI and EEG results are normal.

However, it has been a month since she stopped taking Promethazine and her tongue is still thrusting out very frequently. Does anybody has similar experience? Is there anything I can do to help my baby? And how long does it take for the side effects to fully go away?

what do you mean by "she's having fits"? could you describe her behavior?

is it possible that the tongue thrusting isn't due to the promethazine? i know my niece and nephew both went through a tongue thrusting around 9-11 months old because they were cutting teeth and i think it was just weird feeling to them. is it possible the tongue thrusting is due to teething and maybe it is coincidentally happening at the same time she took promethazine?
