Pravachol generic available yet? (High Cholesterol board)

14th July 2005
I believe Pravastatin is a generic of Pravachol. Do a web search on it. If this is the generic, it might help U save your underwear... :D U can always call your pharmacist and ask also!!

Good luck, and thanx for the laugh....

This is what I found:
*********************
Pravachol is the brand name. Pravastatin is the generic name. Pravachol is the most studied statin (cholesterol-lowering drug) in clinical trials. It is used to decrease LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increase the HDL cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) level. Pravachol is also proven to reduce coronary heart disease events and deaths due to heart attack or stroke.

I'm not familiar with the drug, so maybe someone else can shine more light on the subject.

Oppps, I think I spoke too soon. Here is what it says under Pravachol:

PRESCRIPTION: Yes

GENERIC AVAILABLE: No

PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg

My pharmacist switched me last month from Pravachol to Pravastatin because my insurance will pay only for a generic version. Unfortunately, I developed severe muscle discomfort. I stopped the Pravastatin, and the muscle discomfort went away but still not sure if the two are related.

The FDA approved a generic on April 24th. It's being made by TEVA, an Israel company, but I don't know what they are calling it other then "generic Pravastatin".

Yep, it's available...alas, the price isn't much discounted at least in the U.S. It's still $2 or $3 a pill.

It's called "Pravastatin Sodium"

BTW,
Zocor just went generic as Simvastatin but it's still over $100/month.
Look for these prices to fall as more makers get approval.
BTW, Don't hold me to this but I think TEVA is also the maker of the generic simvastatin.

I had the same problem. After being on Pravachol for over a year. I was given the generic, had muscle cramps and did some research. I have now stopped all together realizing that my feeling of detachment, hot and cold flashes, aches and pains as well as memory loss were all reported side effects. I have been off for a month now and am feeling much better.
