Prednisone & Weight Gain? (General Health board)

22nd May 2006
Goldenwings.

Thank you, again, for communicating to me your experiences with this medication. You have given me a much better understanding of how things work. And, yes, you are right about how it helps to talk to others and basically get as much first hand information that a person can get.

I am hoping a burst of Prednisone will help with this problem.
If it does help with the health issue, how long did it take before you noticed a difference? And vice versa, if you had some bad side effects, how long were you taking it before you noticed that? (As you can see I am really scared taking this, but I am sort of backed up against the wall - no place left to go).

I did take the first pill of Prednisone this morning and was also prescribed Pepcid to protect the stomach. I was also told to eat a banana every morning and take the meds with orange juice, which I did. I now feel like I am waiting for something to happen (whether it be good or bad!) Time will tell.

Now I look at the sodium contents on everything - - something I never paid any attention to before. Did you watch the sodium. What about water retention, did you cut back on beverages?

I am glad you have a medication that helps you. So many things in life are "trade offs."

Miss Helen,

I am 61 years old. I did start taking the Prednisone and Pepcid this morning. The doctor said take it with a glass of orange juice and eat a bananna every day. I have tried lots of things and seen lots of doctors and I am now at the point where there is nothing left to do, but this. MY HMO referred me to the Neurologist at the Cleve. Clinic that I am seeing him now.

I am scared and waiting for something to happen (good or bad). Time will tell.

Please tell me the damage Prednisone did to you (bummer!).

Thanks for sharing so much information with me.

Goldenwings,
The orange juice has a vitamin in it to protect bones (the Dr. said). I do take the Prednisone with a bananna and Pepcid.

From your experience, you are giving me some good insight into what I am dealing with here.

Yes, I guess every situation is different. I am waiting for th "ax to fall." It is just that the side effects are frightening - geez.

Thanks for the info about the website. Stay well,
Sara
