My daughter has had acid reflux disease since birth and is 13 now. First of all you should see a professional...preferrably a gastroenterologist. They will be able to run tests to determine the cause of your pain and treatment. These tests will probably be an upper GI (Xray), a pH probe study that will monitor your acid levels in your esophagus, and posssibly an endoscopy in which they take a look down your esophagus with a scope. Treatment will vary from a change in dietary habits (stay away from spicy foods. carbonated beverages, caffeine and the like), meds such as pepcid, reglan, carafate that will decrease your acid secretions in your stomach and also advice such as sitting up after meals and elevating the head of your bed at night.
The treatment will vary according to how sever the reflux is....sometimes surgery is necessary if there is esophageal erosion or esophagitis involved. If neglected or left untreated, reflux could lead to esophageal cancer.
So please don't ignore your symptoms. Like others state above they could even be heart related. Good luck....Goody
