Sister needs Help - what is wrong? (General Health board)

29th June 2006
Could be severe acid Reflux /GERD. People often don't get heartburn, and other symptoms develop - pain located in various areas around chest and arms, neck and back.

Treatment is a Proton Pump Inhibitor, by prescription. For GERD this severe, don't bother with Prilosec OTC. Get the real stuff by prescription.

For really severe cases, you need 2 doses of a PPI per day, not just 1 dose.

The prescription PPIs are:
Nexium
Prilosec (Prexription) - you can also get a generic prescription version
Prevacid
Aciphex
Protonix
Zegrid

Thank you all for your replies.

We went back to our regular PCP today and also spoke with the endocrinologist and they both agreed she needs to be hospitalized for further testing. Her TSH was normal at 2.32 (range .40 - 5.50), the T4 was normal at 1.3 (range .8 -1.8) and the T3 uptake was slightly low at 27.4 (range 27.8 -40.7), I don't think they tested the FT3 or FT4 and her cortisol was slightly high at 24.5 and so was the lyme AB/RFX at 1.10.The endocrin dr said there are several more blood tests he would like to do that you need to be hospitalized for as well as a CT scan on her pitutary and adrenal glands. So she will be admitted this coming Tuesday which works out well since she is doing a sleep study at the local hospital tomorrow night to rule out heart or breathing problems. She started taking nexium a few days ago and it has helped with some of the chest pains and tightness around the upper back but not her other symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness and the rush of hot/cold feeling she is getting. Today she was complaining of facial tingling and hand tremors.

Hopefully we are closer to resolving this, we shall see. The fact that she is being admitted at least makes us both feel they are now taking her symptoms a little more seriously.

Schao - good luck at the Mayo clinic - I have heard good things about them as well.

Thanks again to all.
