Chronic Bad Breath (General Health board)

4th May 2006
Hi...i too have the same problem with my bb. Mine started when i was 13 and is still here and im 21. Three days ago i went to my ENT and he scoped me and found out i have gerd/lpr. I have been on Nexium for three days and my bb is still here. Ginger...you seem to be an expert on this topic after taking a PPI for a few months will my bb go away?

Thanks for responding...well im am sure that i have lpr bc my symptoms are feels like a lump in my throat, ear popping, mucus, bb, white coating on the tongue, large taste buds in teh back, sour taste in my mouth, sometimes burning in my throat,I used to have tonsil stones but i had my tonsils out, i also have ibs. Now i am taking Nexium to lower the acid in my stomach. So if the acid is lowered then the ph in my mouth should become more basic instead of acidic. Therefore my bb should decrease right? How else can i lower the ph in my mouth to take away this bb? My ENT put a tube through my nose and then it went into my throat and he said everything was very red and he told me i had gerd/lpr. Would he be able to tell from there if i have a hernia or whatever? Thanks again...i just want to get rid of this problem

Nexium takes a while to work, I believe up to 8 weeks.

I havea question about tonsil stones. Those little stinkers!! I've had them for a good part of my life, I'd say since in my teens. It seems though I am getting them more frequently. Is this common? Does it just keep getting worse? I need a referral to a doc and if I ask about the tonsil stones what if he says it's no big deal and they are harmless?
Thanks.

Jon,
Yes mine got worse, but my tonsils were also HUGE...so i had them out.

Ginger,
I rarely have heartburn, however, when the doc scoped me he said everything was inflammed and red...so i am assuming i have lpr. Sometimes i will have (i dont know if it is a burning per say) but a strange feeling alittle below my rib cage...like my upper abdomen. I dont know if that is heart burn or what. My doc wants to keep me on nexium for 1 month or so and then he said he might try a differ PPI. I also have ibs...i wonder if that has anything to do with why i have lpr or visa vera. Honestly i just want the bb to go away...i hate it.

Victim,

I ALWAYS have a bitter taste in my mouth...not just when i swallow. i have been on Nexium a PPI for a few days for my lpr. What did you take for a few months to help the acid reflux??? Yes i have tried Therabreath....it did not work

Ginger i wish you luck with your blood test. I have tried the canadia diet and taking supplements to get rid of it...but it had no effect on my breath. I think my real problem is the acid reflux. I am just hoping that hte Nexium lowers my stomach acid which helps my bb. I read somewhere on the internet that lpr or whatever can be from too little acid. So how would you know if you have too much acid in your system or too little if they have the same symptoms. SOme ppl take apple cider viniger to releive there symptoms...im just getting confused. If i use the ph strips to see the acid level of my salvia, does that show me the acid level of my stomach? My throat feels coated with muscus and the back of my tongue smells. To all those who have bad tonsil stones...I had my tonsils out and yes it hurt but it took away those disguisting stones. I also had a kidney stone a few monthes ago...do you think that has anything to do with acid reflux or bb? thanks so much

hi tinker, i cant remember the medicine, its prescribe by my ENT doc and i finish taking it but i think my reflux is back bec i do burp often and when i swallow i get a bitter taste, i do believe its the reflux and i have to check with the doc on it. hmm, yeah i tried therabreath before too, i think its works as a temporary relief but not really to cure the problem, at least u does make the b.b go away for a while :(

by the way, does ur b.b gets worse especially after u eat? do u also get a white tongue after u eat and after scraping ur tongue? im just finding out any similarities with u.

is the Nexium helping to reduce ur b.b one single bit?

Honestly no the Nexium has not helped yet, but i have only been on it for a few days. I am hopiing that once i cure my lpr that it will cure my bb. After i eat my bb gets very bad as well. THe white tongue is only on the back of my tongue and my taste buds are HUGE.

Ginger...When should i ask the doctor if this is a structural problem or just acid reflux occuring. I mean i have only been diagnosed a little less hten a week ago. RIght now the Nexuim doesnt seem to be working but i dont usually get heartburn so i wouldnt even know.

Hi,

I was tested for H pylori and it came up negative. I have been on Nexium for like 2 1/2 weeks now and i still have the burning and bad breath. I honestly have no idea what to do.

Tinkerbell,

I too have LPR and tonsil stones. I read that you had your tonsils taken out. Did this help the bad breath at all? Was there even a slight improvement? I'm thinking about having my tonsils removed just because of the tonsil stones, and my breath is really awful. I've been on Nexium 2 doses per day for 4 years now, and it's done nothing for my breath. The only thing that seems to get rid of the bad smell temporaily is drinking wine or alcohol, but I can't do that anymore because of the LPR. My toungue is also coated and I have these huge taste buds on the back of my tongue near my tonsils - they look so gross! The tonsil crypts are just enormous - so much gunk comes out whenever I do a cleaning. Also, if you have LPR, you should go and visit the GERD board. All the LPR folks are over there.
