Med. Questions (Addiction & Recovery board)

7th May 2007
Hi everyone. First- Can Neurontin be addidtive ? I'm a recovering alcoholic & have had big issues w/ Vicodin. This board really helped me get through the Vic. w/ drawals. Second- I was just prescribed Tramodol for a shoulder injury. What experiences has anyone had w/this med. ? Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike

Uh oh... this is going to be hard to take, Buddy. Tramadol is highly addictive, although promoted by marketing as not. Search this board and you will find many postings about it.

As far as the Neurontin, my only experience has come from research and knowledge from a friend. She has twice tried to come off of it, both times were disasterous with withdrawl-like symptoms to say the least. Now, she has actually had her dose increased a couple of times.

I don't know what to say about handling the pain. Going through a struggle myself with some big time dental pain. Just flared again which is why I am posting so late.

Let's hope some others with better experience with these two meds hop in here soon.

Sorry about the pain

Neurontin is not in any way shape or form actually 'addicting'.it is an anti siezure med that you can become dependant on but that happens with any med pretty much when it has to be used on a consistant daily basis.having withdrawls from any med only means a dependancy has occured, not an automatic 'addiction' issue.addiction and dependancy are two very different animals.

i would most definitely stay away from tramadol.it would not be a good choice for you given your history.are you actually treating a chronic pain situation here?are you seeing a pain specialist at this point or seeing your primary for your pain?what other non narcotic pain management modalities and meds have you tried in the past and just what IS your main pain issue?marcia
