Hi Sunny,
I agree with Ozzy on much of what she said. Everyone has their own "idea" of what an addict is. I can tell you that he is on some very addictive medications. Vicodin, Fentanyl, and Klonopin are all very addictive. There are even some suggestions that neurontin (gabapentin) is also addictive. He is also on 3 separate mood alterers which are addictive in a sense. Again, it depends on what your idea of addicted is. I'll put it this way, trazadone, wellbutrin, neurontin, and zoloft are all anti-depressants and cannot be stopped abruptly without significant effects and withdrawals. The withdrawals are diffferent than that of pain meds. Of the 4 meds I just listed, wellbutrin and trazadone are the ones that are commomly abuse. Wellbutrin is often snorted or crushed, added to liquid and drank.
If he has taken the vic, fent, and klon for any legnth of time (more than about 2-3 months) then yes he is definately dependent on them if nothing more, physically. And chances are mentally.
A person can be addict and still take his medication as directed. Most of the time an addict does not do that, but it does happen.
I would think about the questions Ozz gave you and also think about these:
Does he hide the meds?
Does he take meds in front of you?
Does he take them (with him) wherever he goes?
Does he keep them close to where he is?
Does he seem to "protect" them?
These questions are all the indications of a likely addict's behavior. They will treat their meds like they are money or gold. Will not share them. Will not take them in front of others because they take more than they're supposed to. They will keep them with them in case they need some. They will not keep them far away for fear of losing them or someone taking them.
I find that with anything in life we usually know the answers to our own questions, that's why we ask them. We are just searcing for vindication and answers.
I hope you did find some answers here.
Good luck and best wishes
Shay
