I'm getting frightened! (Addiction & Recovery board)

30th January 2007
you are most definitely taking way too much tylenol, and hydro too,but the amount of tylenol you are currently taking in is just right at that line of what would be considered 'safe" for a chronic use type of situation, really.the normal safe limit of tylenol for the average once in a while type use would be 4000mgs,but when this is used daily, that safe limit goes down to 3000mgs,just because the chemical that is in your liver that is needed to metabolize tylenol and the other meds and things that pass thru it gets depleted after this amount is sent thru it,it needs time to replenish itself.but when you are having to take in this much daily,it just will take longer for the liver to recreate this chemical.that is why the chronic use limit is only 3000mgs vs the 4000mgs for occasional usage.tho the amount is right on that line, you really are kind of pushing it there daily.

once you actually obtain the MRI,your doc will know much more about what you are dealing with.i am willing to bet from your symptoms that you do have a probable herniation going on in there.just speak with your doc about possibly changing your pain med to something just a bit stronger til you know what you are dealing with and whether or not he will be sending you to a neurosurgeon or some other specialist for a possible surgeical eval.

there are usually only two reasons that someone would take much more than they should of any pain med.one is that there could be an addiction issue going on,but the other would be that your pain med just isn't the right type for your level of pain so you are having to take more just to try and get a handle on it.from what you have stated here,i really DO think that your pain is just way under treated right now.i do know how extreme c spine herniation pain can be,been there done that.right now, i really do feel from what you have stated that you currently are just dependant on these meds right now and not actually addicted.there is a huge difference between addiction, true addiction, and dependancy.anyone can become dependant on just about any med.itas just something that you have been taking a while and your body becomes used to having it,so when it is taken away or not taken at the right time, your brain lets you know that it needs it.this is not in any way the same thing as addictive behavior.there is also psuedo addiction where the person will 'behave' in an addictive type of behavior pattern but they are not actually looking for that high like an addict would, they are simply trying to get proper pain control for some out of control pain.this can present the 'appearance' of addictive behavior but for a totally different reason than for addictive purposes, you know what i mean?

but you really DO need to address this with your doc, soon.like i said, once you get those results back on the MRI,and he will be discussing those with you, either by phone or in his office, you can also discuss better pain management.most docs are willing to treat extreme pain properly, espescially if you are going to be needing some sort of surgical intervention.but you DO need to talk with your doc about this.you deserve to have your pain managed properly so you aren't left to suffer with this.hydro is obviouslly not working for you.adding something like neurontin would probably help alot for your type of pain.it helps to calm the inflammed nerves.this can be taken along with any pain med.let me know what you find out,K? good luck,Marcia
