irritated by pharmacist (Bowel Disorders board)

29th July 2007
My husband was just discharged from the ER with his latest bout of diverticulitis, his second attack this summer. We stopped at our usual pharmacy on the way home to fill prescriptions for Levaquin, Metronidazole, and Percocet while he was still wearing his hospital bracelet and bandaid from his IV. Although the pharmacist filled the prescription for the first two drugs, she refused to fill the Percocet prescription, stating that it looked like a copy, and she didn't believe the signature on it was real. She did not bother to call the hospital to confirm anything and did not notice that the prescription was written on security paper with Rx all over it. Since not many pharmacists are open late on a Sun. night and my husband was in no mood to complain, he gave in, came home, and took a whole bunch of Motrin and went to bed. When I called the pharmacist to challenge her assertion that the prescription looked fake and mentioned that it was on security paper, she said that she would need to confirm that and then stated that the pharmacy was out of Percocet. Maybe I'm just angry that my 39-year-old husband has to deal with so much pain, but I am livid and am ready to file a complaint against this pharmacist. I thought her behavior in denying pain medication and basically assuming my husband was a drug seeker without checking the facts was highly unprofessional. Honestly, my husband probably wouldn't even have taken it, but it is a securty blanket in the event that he has a bad night, and it would be nice to have on hand since he has had 4 attacks in the past two years, all of which were excruciatingly painful. Am I overreacting, or should I file a complaint about the pharmacist? We're hoping, if we can ever get DH well enough to schedule the colonoscopy, that we will be able to schedule a prophylactic bowel resection this fall. Sure hope they don't deny him painkillers then! Thanks!
