Was the 24 hours prepared for ahead of time? For me that makes a huge difference. I go the video store and rent a whole lot of stuff to watch. Particularly when you're up in the middle of the night and can't sleep. Also, tape a bunch of shows you would never watch if you weren't trapped at home, like really old episodes of ER, etc. If you have cable they have back-to-back reruns on some channels of shows like Law&Order or West Wing. Also books, magazines.
Next, take a look at the Detox Recipe for Opiates and stock up on that stuff. I personally recommend against the benzos. One thing that might help instead of benzos is an OTC called meclizine. It's a mild antihistamine that is the brand-name Dramamine II (the II part is crucial, Dramamine I is just benadryl). They gave it to me when I had viral vertigo last year and it calms the vertigo and calms the patient. Makes you a little drowsy so might help w/ sleep, but much less so than the stuff in Tylenol PM and benadryl. Get that stuff for night-time if you need something stronger.
Stock your fridge with gatorade, bottled water, coca-cola (if you get nauseated) and foods like saltines, pretzels, white rice, chicken-noodle soup.
Take a few days off of work. Get the meds out of the house or if you are going to taper, give them to someone who will regulate you.
Tell your doctor. If your doc can prescribe you an anti-emetic (anti-vomiting) if you get really sick. I take compazine but it can cause wierd reactions in some people, so maybe try one of the ones that is unrelated to compazine.
Have people come hang out with you/help you when you feel like company.

Find a meeting or support group, I've been told by a therapist that addictions have better success in support groups rather than individual therapy.
