   dizziness, vertigo, nausea (Allergies board)

27th June 2003
I was told to stay away from anything that is an antihistamine b/c it is drying and Chlortrimeton is one of them. Antihistamines are good for those with allergies who have runny noses, watery eyes, etc. I am strictly on Decongestants which helps "liquify" the mucous so it will drain. I am sure everyone is different, but this is what my MD said. They are trying to "thin out" the material in my sinuses so it will drain, so to do this you need to stay away from antihistamines that dry you out and can "harden" the material. At one point my MD put me on Meclizine for the dizziness which didn't help. (Meclizine is like Dramamine). My ENT said the reason my MD was trying Meclizine was that it "has a similar effect as an antihistamine and will dry you up". If you have less fluid build up in your sinuses (and especially your ears), you're less inclined to get the dizzies from things like motion sickness. That is why they give people Meclizine or Dramamine or even just a plain old Sudafed or such before flying. I had to stop the Meclizine b/c it was doing the opposite of what my decongestant was doing.

Like I said, everyone is different! If Chlortrimeton works for you GREAT, and hopefully it will help others. I totally wish it worked for me, but it doesn't. We obviously have two different things going on. I do not have any allergies for one. My sinusitis was caused by some dental work and it has been hell trying to get it to go away.

Reading this I wanted to share some info I read recently about motion sickness. Did you know that studies have proven GINGER to be more effective than dramamine (Gravol)in preventing motion sickness? My family tried this out on a cruise to Alaska last September. It was REALLY rough water, and when the Canada Dry ginger ale ran out, I brewed tea from fresh ginger and drank that. I didn't throw up the entire journey - none of us did! The rest of the boat was green with envy. lol Ginger snaps, candied ginger...there are lots of ways to eat it - but try it, it really works!

sobear33 I don't know what menears disease is but hopefully somebody does because I also would like to know because my symptoms sound exactly like your symptoms!

I took a trip down to North Carolina to stay with a friend for a month, and about halfway into my stay I started to get this dizzy, naseaus feeling which has stayed for about a month and a half now. I am now back in Wisconsin and it seems to be subsiding, but it is still there. Especcially the fullness of the ear feeling. That is always their... whether I feel pressure all over my head, whether I feel dizzy, or whether I feel naseaus, that ear fullness feeling is always there. So far 3 doctors have not really had any idea. The first one in NC said I probably had allergies that I did'nt know about (never had allergies in my life) because Mount Airy, NC was a hotbed for allergens. Does anyone know if that is true?

I took anti-biotics for two weeks while in NC and Claritin D... but felt the same. When I got to Wisconsin I got a shot of penecillan and was told to take more niacin. I also saw a chiropractor a few times which I think is helping (all be it not as fast as I would like). So after all that is it possible for me to still have a "sinus infection" or whatever is causes this full feeling in my ears, not to mention the constant "hazy" feeling that I feel most of the time. I also have had a few days lately (did'nt happen when I first got this) where I get head pain from a feeling of pressure all over my head... but especcially my temples, is that a sinus headache (I have never had one before)?

So hopefully whatever I have is slowly.... very very slowly going away, but I was just wondering if it makes sense that I could have been allergic to something in MOunt Airy, NC and now its just a matter of time till I start to feel normal again? Because I just cannot stand feeling like this all the time... it has to go away :) Oh yeah and meclizine doesn't help.

Hope someone deciphered my message and maybe has some ideas :)

Thanks.

Has anyone who got good resuts from the Cholortrimatine ever tried Benydrl or old fashioned "drowsey" Dramamine (not the meclinze type) and what was your response? There are two types of Dramamine and one has the brain factor (old fashioned) and one does not (meclinzine, i.e. Dramamine II) as I understand it.

Sorry about all the misspellings! ;)

I have had disabling vertigo/nausea for over nine years now. I have constant sinus pain and pressure, many sinus infections. I have sore throat and trouble swallowing. My neck hurts most days. I have constant brain fog.

Any of you who have brain fog and vertigo would find a google search on the words "cognitive effects of a vestibular disorder" very interesting and in many ways relieving.

I have been taking old fashioned Dramamine for the reason of the "brain factor" and had previously been on meclizine for years. I use flonase and sudefed.

In the earlier stages of my condition I was able to keep working using decongestant, expectorant and very low dose valium (Warning: I don't need informational lectures about the addictiveness of it, it was prescribed by a neurologist and I quit taking it just fine two years later).

Then I got worse during a really bad allergy summer and was not able to work or get around very much since then and it has now been three and a half years.

I may very well try the Cholotrimtine (or however you spell it) I used to take it daily for Interistial Cystitis years ago, way before the vertigo/nausea thing started and it worked very well for that. I used to buy the generic brand and it was very cost effective. I just never thought about using it for the vertigo.
