Antibiotics and Birth Control (Birth Control board)

26th February 2005
I have recently read that antibiotics can decrease the efficacy of the pill, and I'm a little concerned. Right now, I am on the pill and taking meds for a bladder infection (macrobid). My doctor, fully aware that I would be taking both, did not mention any risks. Should I be using secondary contraception? If so, for how long? I assume the length I take the antibiotics would influence how long the pill is ineffective; I have a prescription for five days (ten pills).

If anyone could answer my questions about the effect of antibiotics that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

First of all, not all antibiotics affect the pill. But, Macrobid is one of those antibiotics that can affect the pill. You will need to use a back-up method if you have sex for AT LEAST 7 days after taking your last pill.

Many physicians are totally unaware of drug interactions. Pharmacology is only a small part of their education, and failure to keep up with new products/interactions leaves many doctors in the dark. This is why the pharmacy is so important-- to detect such interactions that the doctors aren't aware of.
