Will start birth control pills, but worried about side effects... (Birth Control board)

13th January 2006
You may want to check into a mini pill. It is progesterin only (no estrogen) and will make side effects less potent. I have been on it for just over a month and a half now and have actually been able to lose some weight and the need to snack.

I gained nearly 75 pounds within six years of taking estrogen containing pills (Lo-Ovral, Ortho Tricyclen Lo). Although everyone has different reactions to different pills. But on the mini, I eat less, feel more energetic (like my old self), and I haven't broke out in acne. The only downfall is, your periods are irregular. I went 45 days without a period and when it did come, it was mild, not heavy.

Just some things to watch out for when taking a BCP....depression, irritability, anger, anxiety, paranoia....I myself and many other women have suffered from these while taking the pill. If you start noticing any abnormal mental states, get in and switch your brand because hormone levels are not of balance, don't just assume that it is your depression coming back, unless changing pills doesn't help. I became a rage-a-holic on my Lo-Ovral and got so stressed out/anxious/paranoid on Ortho Tricyclen Lo that I thought I was going to have to commit myself.

Good luck!
