Blood pressure meds and their effects on glucose? (Diabetes board)

18th November 2006
Greetings.

I read where high blood pressure meds can effect the results of a glucose test. I am curious because I never had higher than normal glucose levels until I started taking a high blood pressure med. I take Lisinopril-HCTZ which contains a diuretic. If this is true, how and why does high blood pressure meds effect ones blood glucose?

Ron, yes, I have read and heard that diuretics and beta blockers, especially Atenolol can affect your glucose. I always had very normal glucose levels until they put me on Atenolol 2 years ago. Slowly but surely my numbers are going up. I asked my dr. and hubby's cardio man about it and they both said it could have an affect. Hubby is type 2, and was on BP meds. for years with no problems, yet when they put him on Atenolol his numbers went a little higher. Since we both have learned this, he and I have both cut our doseage down, as U have to wean off Atenolol.

Hope this helps, and U should talk with your dr. about a possible alternative BP med. Good luck, and hope your glucose numbers weren't too bad, mine last test were borderline, and that is scaring the pants off of me.

Good luck, and best wishes...
