Help me please! I am new to allergies. (Allergies board)

16th July 2005
I broke out with an allergy from one of my many
medications about six weeks ago. I had been on some of them for at least five years or more. That allergic reaction surprised me, but the doctor said it can happen. The doctor took me off of four suspected medications. I went to a dematologist and was given a cream to clear them up. They finally cleared up after about 2.5 weeks.

I then introduced myself back to each of the medications. The first (number 1) I took for 2 weeks. No allergy. I then began the number med number 2. Within 5 days I began to break out again. I called the pharmacist and he told me it would take 7 days for med 2 to get out of my system and the dermatologist told me to start back on the cream..

Question 1: Can I still keep breaking out if the med is suppose to be out of my system? Today is the 7th day and I noticed I am starting to break out on my legs. Just slightly, but there are rashes in small places on my shin.

Question 2: The atopical medication is Clobetasol Propionate Cream .05%. Has anyone ever used it? Could it get into you blood stream and cause problems?

Question 3: Does it sound like it is med 2 which is Lipitor? I have been on it for probably ten years if not more. In fact all of these medications I have been on for at least three years or more. The first time the allergy did not start until the dosage of med 1 was increased from two to three pills per day. But I didn't break out for two weeks when introduced back to it at just 2 pills per day. I wasn't going to go to that 3rd pill. So I have been on 2 mg of pill one for two weeks. It was within five days of taking med 2 that the rash began to come back.

Question 4: I have never ever been allergic to anything. This is a first and I can really sympathize with those of you that have them often. I can't keep my hands from scratching myself. Thanks for any response. This may be to confusing. I am going insane with the itching although it was worse the first time I broke out. Any help or advice would be truly appreciated. Oh, I called the pharacist this afternoon and he told me this cream is for getting rid of the rash and not so much for controlling the itch.- sam

Unexplained rashes can be a symptom of liver problems. Has your liver function been tested recently? The fact that the Lipitor seems to have caused it, plus the length of time you've been taking it would seem to indicate that it might be affecting your liver.

Yes, I have blood tests on my liver done every six months. Thanks for responding. I am quite sure it is the Lipitor for things are slowing beginning to clear up. I tell you one thing I feel sorry for people that have allergies like this on a daily basis and can't find out what is wrong. They simply drive me nuts. I am sleeping, and this morning I am not itching as much. I was told the medication was not for itching, but to get rid of the rash. Again, thanks for responding. - sam

No, I have been on all of these medications for a number of years. But when the doctor increased my prandin from 2mg to 3mg that is when I broke out in a rash (hives) the first time. I thought it would have been the prandin. But he took me off of all four and sent me to the dermatologist.

They ran a biopsy and it came back as an allergic reations to one of my medications. So I stayed off everything until the rash cleared up. Then I started back in on the prandin and I was on it two weeks with no problem. But when I introduced the Lipitor, I broke out within five days. The itching just drives you up a wall. I don't know how people that have had hives for 10-15 years could stand it. It has been off and on for me for just about 1.5 months and it is a wonder I didn't scratch myself until I drew blood. I do have some scratches though. Anyway, my quess it the Lipitor.

I did notice this morning when we went out the temps were over 100 and I began to itch in some places. It will get up to 116 this afternoon and has been that way for four days. We stay inside believe me!- sam
