Regular use of Viagra after prostatectomy (Cancer: Prostate board)

Quote from rfj121:
I am curious if anyone has had experience with daily Viagra therapy starting soon after RRP. There have been a few clinical trials suggesting that this may help in the restoration of normal sexual function by stimulating blood flow early, but I gather the evidence is still pretty limited. My surgeon has given me some information (and a prescription) but has made no predictions and cost is an issue. I am 47, and had RRP five weeks ago with nerves spared one side only. Incidentally I was surprised a few days ago to experience my first (dry) orgasm post surgery but without erection. (Enjoyable for me; of little use to my partner!) It also produced some short-lived pain in the area of the (absent) prostate. I'd welcome commentary from anyone with experience or an opinion on this.

rfj121,
Having an RP at such an early age is in your favor because younger men usually recover faster as you already know. With 1 nerve spared it may take you longer for erections to recover. I purchased 2 Viagra tablets but have not had to use them but I will try them. I had both nerves spared (7/2002,age 46) and erections have returned but are shorter. It seems the more I work my "muscle" the better things are getting. When purchasing Viagra get the 100mg strength. These can be broken in half to save money, but you may need the higher strength to start with. Also Levitra & Cialis are now available. If you have had any hormone therapy things can take longer too. I still get pain in the area where my prostate was after orgasm, occasionally. I think this may be due to action on the urethra (where it is reconnected) when the penis is stimulated(i.e. pushing & pulling).Positive4U ;)

I had RP 14 months ago at age 52. Both nerve bundles were spared. Although erection-wise, I'm beginning to see some real signs of life, I must say that Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra have been of little benefit. I have learned from quite a few men that early, daily use of a vacuum pump can force blood into the penis and deter atrophy. I think many doctors are remiss about informing their patients on the importance of stimulating the penis as soon as possible after surgery and practicing some technique like a pump to keep blood flowing in and out of the penis. There is some evidence that injection therapy may hasten the return of natural erections and deter the shrinkage and atrophy that result from prolonged disuse of the penis. In short, "use it or lose it" does apply here.

I lost all nerves at age 49. PLEASE take 2 tylenol 1 hour before taking viagra, levitra or cialis. NONE of these wonder drugs do anything for me except create a giant headache.

Dry orgasams are something else. I keep stretching and hoping - after a year it is depressing.
