   Lantus ? (Diabetes board)

4th March 2008
The short answer is, try different things until you find what works best. Taking all your Lantus in the morning is a good place to start. I found, when doing this, that I woke with high blood sugars. I concluded that Lantus wasn't lasting the full 24 hours for me, and this together with the dawn phenomenon blood glucose surge, meant that I had to try something else. So I started splitting the Lantus dose between morning and evening shots. This works well for me, and it is also an option for you. But I would suggest trying taking all your in the morning first.

Hi Abadoo,
I had the exact same problems you are describing. Super high at night after dinner and so low in the morning I couldn't even think! Lantus works for 16-18 hours. I switched it to the morning and I wake up with normal sugars and that way I am covered until I go to bed. HUGE difference.

How I switched over is you have a 4 hour window with lantus. I used to take it at 11pm, then the next night I took it at at 2am, then the next day I took it at 6am, then after that I was set to take it in the mornings once I woke up. BUT you might want to ask your Endo before changing anything. I've been diabetic for 23 years so I'm used to adjusting insulin myself.

Mark1e's idea of splitting it is a great idea and I know someone who does that and she loves it. You need to figure out what works best for you.

Good luck!

I've been told by a couple of docs that Lantus is strongest in the first 6-12 hours, and weakens for the rest of the 12.

Split shots never worked for me. They only gave me problems.

But since they are working for you, all you need to do now is pick up some Humalog. It's far better to use than Regular (or at least that's what many others are saying, including me).

Also, since you're trying to lose weight, don't eat at night. If you absolutely need to, eat good carbs (go make a salad). If your blood sugar drops when you don't eat around that time, then eat protein before you hit the sheets.

Do you drink enough water? Just by experience, Humalog shots and 8-10 glasses of water a day work wonders with my blood sugar.
