   Byetta and lantus? (Diabetes board)

4th March 2008
A problem with injecting insulin is that absorption is variable. It changes all the time, which is why you sometimes go higher or lower than you expect to. The bigger the insulin dose, the bigger this effect is. But you can reduce it substantially by splitting the 60 unit Lantus dose into two or three shots. If you give them at different times of the day, it also flattens out the peaks in insulin action. This makes going low a lot less likely.

As far as Byetta is concerned, my understanding is that it needs to be injected before meals. If you inject it without eating, you the run the risk of going low. I saw comments on another forum that using longer needles can make it more effective. Good luck!
