   Irregular Heartbeat??? (Diabetes board)

1st November 2007
Hello I am a type 2 diabetic and am on insulin. I take 60 units of Lantus with each meal and 20 units of Humalin R 500 with each meal.As well as 4mg twice a day of Avandia,150mg @ night of Buderion SR, 90mg @ night of Cymbalta,7.5mg a day of Enablex,1000mg 3 times a day of Gabapentin,20mg twice a day of Citalopram,1000mg twice a day of Metformin and 0.5mg twice a day of Lorazapram. My question is that my sugars constantly run between 350-450 daily, I have been diagnosed for 4 yrs now and I know all about the right foods to eat and excercising but still the high sugars. I have been told by my dr that the reason the sugars are so high is beause I have been diabetic since a young girl but it was never detected therefore it was left untreated and over the yrs tore me apart.I have seen a Endo and she changed a bunch of my meds around and there for awhile I felt great but throughout time I guess my body became immune to them and I started feeling sleepy and nausiated, weak and hungover all over again.I am about 30 lbs overweight and am working at losing it. I previously lost 48 lbs last summer but these last 30 aren't going as fast. But lately my biggest scare is that I can not stay awake for nothing. And also I have had really weird heat beats lately, I have looked around online and I believe it might be heart palputations(SP?)I have a real hard time catching my breath and it feels like my heart is skipping a beat or wants to jump right out of my chest. Has any other diabetics experienced this? I have also been having slight pains under my right breast as well as when I take a deep breath in I get a shooting pain from head to toe like I just got electricuted. I just wanted to see if anyone can explain what this might be so when I go to the dr I can suggest some things maybe then he can take me seriously for once. Thanks to anyone who might be able to give me some insight!

Lantas is a basil insulin that is LONG ACTING - and can be taken once a day - sometimes two times a day at the VERY most... I am not sure of the dosage per pound however I weigh 160 lbs and take only 37 units of Lantas once a day. I DO take Novo rapid each time I eat (my 'scale' is 2 units of NovaRapid for each 15grams of carbohydrates (1 'CARB') I eat) - each meal is between 3 and 5 'carbs' - so between 6 - 10 units per meal... Now if you are more active then the NovoRapid can be used as only ONE (1) unit per each CARB...

I was told that it IS possible to take too much insulin and consequently your sugars will be HIGHER again... Perhaps you should ask your Endo to confirm amounts of insulin for your body weight...

Constant high sugars cause sleepiness/drowsiness and you can eventually go into ketoacidosis.

I have been diabetic since I was 12 years old and am now almost 38... my suggestion is to talk to your Endo and confirm your insulin amounts! You could also talk to your Diabetic dietician, as they have a wealth of knowledge on dosages and insulin types, too.

I believe you are taking too much insulin and the Metfomin, I thought, was NOT insulin - but a medication to get your body to recognise its OWN insulin when you body was still producing its own... Not sure if your body is still making its own insulin.

I thought Cymbalta and Citalopram were from the same drug family? Not sure how long you've been on these meds... I have just started Citalopram but am only on 20mg ONCE a day... not sure of the normal dosage parameters... I know the Citalopram has been giving me a bit of feelings like a 'panic' attack - like when you get an adrenalin rush and your heart starts to beat faster and you feel 'scared' or 'startled'. This is supposed to subside within two weeks, along with its other symptoms.

Hope this has helped you.
