Hi, I have been taking 20mg of fluoxetine(prozac) for 8 weeks, I went to see a new psych last night and he gave me klonopin(clonazepam). He gave me 1mg pills but he told me to take .5 and see how it did, So I did before bed and I became more anxious and couldn't get to sleep so at about 5 hours later I took the other half and still I couldn't get to sleep and I had a panic attack! I don't know if it was because I pumped myself up about taking a new med because I was nervous or what! I called my doc and he said to start taking the 1mg instead of the.5. Can anyone give me any info on this, I would greatly appreciate it! thanks  Carly

You became anxious because you expected to much out of Klonopin to soon. The more anxious you became wanting it to work for sleep, you evertually took more, thinking that it would then work. It did not so by now you are on your way to a full blown panic attack. Klonopin is generally taken once a day and will level out at the right dosage to last for the 24 hour period. Everything that I have seen on it suggests that the dosage be taken in the morning and I can see where that would be correct, not wearing off around bedtime. Maybe also taken in two smaller doses morning and night? Discuss this with your Doctor as you did and stay with what he says. You will begin to feel the benefits from it soon. Xanax will have an immediate effect but does not last more then 5-7 hours. Klonopin is much better for you for long term and less of a hassle to manage. Chin up.

bulletin, Hey,thanks for you input I agree with you, I expected to much from it. My doc thinks I have a high tolerance because ativan .5 did nothing for me. I will do as told and take 1mg tonight to see what effect it has on me, I don't want to take it now because I am not sure if it will make me sleepy, dizzy or what and I have to drive so I will wait to make sure. So klonopin takes a while to kinda give effect? My doc told me to take .5 in the morning and .5 at night, But when I talked to him today and told him about how I felt he said just take 1mg, and that I didn't have to take it every day if I felt I didn't need it or wasn't anxious.thanks!!!

Sickman, I didn't even ask for it, I had just explained how my previous psych treated me and told him I didn't think it was fair and I would like to be trusted. He seems like a great doc and I think I will be much happier with this one, He seems very educated on meds and panic disorder and that comforts me. So how is your xanax working for you now? Good I hope. I don't have any refills, I think he wants to make sure it is a good med for me....eventually he is going to up my prozac from 20mg to 30mg but he wanted to see how the klonopin works for my constant anxiety. talk to all soon!

Glad to hear that you are getting some results and feeling better about the action of Klonopin. I take xanax every 6 hours for extreme panic disorder. It works, but trying to understand my condition and the effects of the medication helps to make xanax appropriate for me and keeps me from abusing it by raising my dosage in the belief that it has stopped working at the level I am at. I seem to be doing better lately but panic disorder is ever changing and so must I be ready to deal with it. I'll get through it, one way or another, as long as I don't let it get the best of me and cause un-necessary depression. That is the hard part but we all can do it. Good luck with your new Doctor, seems to be working well with you. Luck again

I've taken both xanax & Klonopin. Xanax kicks in within minutes but does not last as long & I could tell when it wore off & it left me shakey. The Klonopin works much better, lasts longer & I don't feel the effects of it wearing off.
I do take mine at bedtime, about an hour before I plan to go to bed. It relaxes me once I lay down & I also do not have all those thoughts running thru my head that keep me awake.

I do think you set yourself up to expect an immediate reaction. Try keeping a positive attitude that it WILL work and relax and let it do the job.

thanks, I agree with what you said lori about expecting to much. I slept better last night. How long does it usually take to kick in? I took it about an hour and a half before bed yesterday. I think I think about it to much, I need to concentrate on something else. thank you for the advice.

hey there,
congtrats on the new doc, i am glad you were able to be honest. i was wondering if you have ever taken any benzo before? i don't remember if you had tried one before or not, i just remember your last doc wouldn't give you any. i am still on xanax, but am finding that my body is adapting to it faster than i would like. i don't want to keep having to take more to get the same effect that just one gave me two weeks ago. i don't know, i just got a refil of xanax, so i don't think my doctor will want to try something different. i was just wondering if you had tried both xanax and klonopin, just to see what you thought.

The only other benzo I have tried was generic ativan .5mg and it did nothing for me at all. I have never tried xanax, My med fluoxetine and xanax don't go well together so he put me on klonopin. I am not sure what I think of klonopin yet, I have only takin it twice. It doesn't really make me feel much. I just gotta give it some time and stop worrying about taking a new med. Have you tried ativan? Your doc might try you on that or maybe klonopin. I hope all is well for you!!!!! Talk to you soon. carly

I take the klonopin about an hour before i go to bed. without it the thoughts just kept racing thru my head and I could not sleep, now I feel calm & relaxed when I go to bed & fall asleep with no problem. Hopefully, you'll get the same results once you stop worrying about it.
I know for myself, that if i read the side affects of a med, I will surely have them, so I made up my mind not to read anything about Klonopin & it's working great. Funny how our minds can even affect how meds work on us.
