High dosage steroid treatment (Addison's Disease board)

9th May 2008
I cannot comment on what happened in your case, as I am not a doctor, but I do have an idea as to how my son got so sick and in an Addison's crisis.

About 5 weeks ago they did an occipital nerve block in the back of my son's head to try to stop migraines. They used kenalog steriod. It did not help the headache at all and he just kept going downhill and getting sicker and weaker and his head much worse than before the injection. The pain got worse over time and the nausea started up very bad and he started throwing up a lot. I asked his doctor for the ACTH stim test because my mother has Addison's and I thought his low blood pressure drops he's had since he was 6 years old might indicate an adreanl problem. The cardiologist also recommened further adrenal testing because of the vasovagal sycope, so I was able to have the ACTH stim done. It came back that his adrenals were barely functioning by that time.

He was extremely nauseous by the time the test was done and throwing up a lot. He has lost 18 pounds since mid March. His GP doctor said that what might have happened is the kenalog was slowly declining in his body but his adrenals were not recovering so he was going into a crisis state. I can't tell you how very sick he got. We took him to the ER twice during that week. We are still not sure why his adrenals are not working. We are going to the endo next week for all the test results. He still takes cortisol replacement and is stabalized and doing some better now. He has a little trouble with nausea still and eats small amounts.

I've seen steriod injections affect my mother in much the same way before finding out she has Addison's. It's a wonder she survived the injections as sick as she got a few weeks after having them done. She took them for a back condition. She got more nauseous and weaker each time.

[QUOTE=rumpled;3562888]You need to go seek medical treatment NOW.
Your doctor suppressed your adrenal glands - your cortisol, not your adrenaline.
You are giving the symptoms of an adrenal crisis and this can be life threatening.
High dose steroids shuts down the steroids.

Votre docteur ne sait pas ce qu'il dire - c'est dangereuse! S'il vous plait, allez-vous ou hopital maintenant.
