diagnosed 10 years ago with fibromyalgia (Back Problems board)

8th September 2007
I have been having extreme pain in my lower back in between the coxal and lumbar/sacral area where they meet. If I apply pressure to these areas the pain is unbearable. It also makes the medial side of my knee burn and hurt. when the doctor injects Kenalog down the sciatic nerve it really helps but after 3 to 4 weeks it wears off and the pain returns. I had an MRI recently and asked for help from you with the results and received answers from you that helped but am courious if this has anything to do with fibromyalgia or if this is something to be concerned about? This has been going on since my search to find out what I had and resulting with the Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia only the burning in the knee is new. Please help with this. I'm 48 years old and feel like I am 80

Hi, you mentioned you recently had an MRI. Was it on the lumbo-sacral area?
And what were the results of the MRI?

I believe Kenalog is a steroid. Steroids are anti-inflammatories and many people with disc herniations get steroid injections in hopes to reduce inflammation caused by the herniation. I have had these myself and the injections usually last 3-4 weeks for me. How did they do the injection? Did they put it into your spine? Or just into your muscles? I almost sounds to me like you might have a herniation, maybe sciatica if the pain radiates down your leg to your knee..

Jalynn, your MRI results indicate that you have some disc issues and that could be the cause of the burning behind your knee and the sciatica. I would urge you to find a spine specialist to address these issues and find a course of treatment that would be beneficial. What kind of dr. is giving you the kenalog injections? I hope he is being careful and not giving you more than 3 in a 12 months span, as steroids can cause the bones to thin. You have enough to deal with without that happening.

I, too, have fibro and it can cause all kind of aches and pains, but I really think what you describe is coming from your back problems. How long has it been since you had the MRI? If more than 6 months, you may want to undergo another to see if there have been changes.
